Now In Service The 787 Dreamliner Takes To The Skies
At Last Boeing 787 Dreamliner Is Here
When the Boeing 787 Dreamliner was announced back in 2003.
Just about everyone thought that Boeing management had gone nuts.
The future was in massive cattle trucks, like the Airbus 380.
The smaller jet was doomed to fail?
Now 8 years on and it seems like Boeing were on the money.
With the economic downturn and huge fuels price increases, we have seen in the last few years.
People are taking less long haul holidays, and business is cutting back on flights in favour of video conferencing.
The 787 is just the plane to fill, particular tourism and business class niche', that we are going to need in the next 30+ years.
From the outset. Boeing had a huge mountain to climb.
It is now common knowledge that Boeing had massive internal management issues, and cost overruns to deal with.
They got there in the end, The 787 Dreamliner is now in service.

What Will The 787 Do For You
All Nippon Airlines (ANA) was the first to take delivery of the new aircraft. What does this all mean to us, the traveling public?
When we rock up to the airport to catch our flight's for our annual two week holidays.
We generally don't care what we are flying in, as long as it works, is fairly comfortable and has a nice crew, with plenty of drinks and food coming thick and fast.
In effect, anything to take your mind of the boredom of flying and the hell of check-in.
Many years ago, at the dawn of flight. It was an adventure and exciting to fly.
Now it's just a pain, admittedly still a fast way to travel, but still a pain.
In fact now, in many parts of Europe it is quicker to catch a high speed train than it is to fly.
London to Paris on the Eurostar 2 hours and 15 minutes to complete a journey of 307 miles.
It would take the same amount of time to go through security at Heathrow airport.
Boeing Business Leaders Read The Future Right
The decades of planning, and with 10's of $millions spent in finance. Boeing took a big gamble.
Getting any aircraft on the runway usually means nothing to you or me, and that is how it should be.
Aircraft manufacturers on the other hand, have to anticipate future needs and build accordingly.
Boeing seems to have read the future right.

This Jet Really Is A Game Changer
The decision to build the 787 Dreamliner must have been incredibly difficult.
Boeing had already given us arguably the most successful passenger aircraft of all time.
The Boeing 747 Jumbo. To suddenly decide to go for a midsize, wide-body airplane, must have seemed crazy.
We can see now that it was the right decision.
The massive Airbus 380 has had all kinds of problems in terms of where it can land.
Many airports just cannot accommodate the huge aircraft.
Those that can, have had to spend huge sums of money; upgrading and reinforcing their runways, in order for the A380 aircraft to land.
Timing Is Everything
The Dreamliner has hit the market, during the worst economic climate in living memory.
Not the time one would assume to be the best time to launch a new aircraft.
In spite of the current economic climate.
Boeing has managed to achieve an order book of 1,000, of the new jet's already ordered.( at time of publication)
These first 1,000 aircraft sales incidentally, are the breakeven point, that Boeing had to sell to recoup it's investment.
The research and development costs of the 787, have been in the region of $32 billion.
Boeing is now in the enviable position, of secure work for it's workforce, for a long time into the future. In these tough times that is good news indeed.
Designed With You In Mind
For many years customer comfort, in terms of seating has given way, to cramming as many in as possible.
Some aircraft seats, feel like they were designed as a form of torture device, rather than a seat, that a human being may sit in for hours.
We seem to passively accept that aircraft seats, will be uncomfortable?
In recent years, the traveling public, has had to pay an extra flight tax to fly.
More importantly we have been more interested in improving the airport experience.
We all recognise the need for high security, but things have become almost intolerable with endless queuing, measly baggage allowances and all the hassle's associated with modern day flying.
It has become very irritating to say the least. Boeing designers are well aware of this, and have factored this into the interior design of the 787.
Space The Final Frontier
It's seating and entrance lobby to the aircraft, have been designed to give a feeling of space.
Changes in our flying habits will benefit the 787.
We are taking fewer and shorter flights. Many people are fed up with the whole airport experience and the Dreamliner designers, have taken this into consideration too.
When you enter the airplane you walk into a wide open expansive entrance lobby.
It looks like the reception of a modern hotel. Also the eye-line when you are seated, is designed to make you feel, that there is more room and space.
Not the claustrophobic feel of earlier aircraft. The windows have also had a makeover and are considerably bigger than other comparable aircraft.
The windows have smart glass, that can be dimmed for sleep, no more sliding window blind panels.
Boeing have pulled it off again, much as the 747 Jumbo was the plane of the last 40 years. The 787 Dreamliner is the airplane for today, and for the next 40 years.

being an engineer, I had to go to the spec sheet right away.
197' wing span and the fully loaded take off weight is half of a 747, which weighs a little over a million pounds, fully loaded on takeoff. over 200 passengers.
interesting
thanks for the spec sheet.
Hello alocsin,
Thanks buddy your sharing much appreciated. Your previous comments were wonderful too. I actually really like this hub. Appeals to the geek in me lol.
My comments are already on this hub, but just wanted to thank you for SHARING.
Hi Credence2,
You are right on all three points. It is 20% more fuel efficient, it flies higher and faster that other passenger jets, and it looks amazing inside.
Like a big airy hotel lobby when you enter. The ceilings are high throughout the 787.
I am definitely going dreamliner next time I fly, if I want a Double Decker, I'll go to London. lol
Hi, molometer, You make a mouth watering invitation to hop on board the 'Dreamliner' and test fly it. The cabin does look like quite a departure from what we have been used to. I presume that it is more fuel efficient and has a greater airspeed?
Hi stugod,
How's it going? I thought you might be interested in this hub.
I get what you say about a numbers game but who knew fuel was going to go through the roof, it seems to have played right into Boeing's favour.
The Airbus is also incredible efficient but declining number's of people flying long haul is going to have an effect.
The 787 dreamliner is 20% more efficient and can land anywhere, this I think will play to it's advantage.
I suppose there is room for both as the 747 fleet's have to be replaced soon. The choice is really between these two aircraft. And the future travel needs of the public.
Thanks for your interesting comments, stugod.
I suppose the numbers game is in play here versus the fuel efficiency. I always go with numbers as the more bums on seats the more potential for spin off money. I am not knocking the plane by the way stunning bit of kit. It may turn out to be a dead heat between them..Voting a big up
Hello Zainnisar,
This is a very interesting piece of information on the pressurization system on the Airbus A330. Often when we fly we have to constantly equalize the pressure in our ears; your experience sounds very irritating.
I wonder if Airbus are aware of this issue? It must be happening to other people as well?
I too have flown on the 777 and it was amazing, the seats were very comfortable and the 787 has apparently stepped it up another notch.
You are correct that All Nippon Airways ANA are the first to take delivery of the new 787, Nippon Airways (55), Qantas (50), and United Airlines (50).
Boeing is stepped up production from 2 airplanes a week to 10 airplanes per week from Nov 2011.
Thanks for the information on the pressurization issues of the Airbus A330.
787 is a great plane and will be a darling for many airlines, where they are flying with 777 and have over capacity. I love 777 its the most comfortable plane so far and about those torture seats I have experienced in Airbus A330 and also its pressurization system is so ridiculous that throughout the journey I had to open my mouth to deal with irritation in my ears, "looks odd".
Looking forward to fly with 787 but I think currently only All Nippon is flying 787s.
Hi Susan,
That's interesting that your father worked for Boeing. It is an amazing company.
Security was always tight in London, in recent years it has become ludicrous, mainly because other countries are so slack.
Both international and domestic flights are under heavy security.
It is not going to change anytime soon either. At least the 787 aims to help us to forget the hassles of airports.
I shall give it a try, when I next fly to the USA which will be to Las Vegas in December. So whoever is flying the 787 will get my ticket money.
My Dad worked for Boeing in Seattle in the late 70's and early 80's. I found your article very interesting and am sure my Dad would have too. I must say that the 787 is a gorgeous plane. I guess I've been lucky with all the flights that I've had in the last ten years as I've never had a problem with long line ups, security, or anything else. But then again I only fly within North America. I do hate the little planes though and find them quite cramped. I would love to fly on the 787 someday.
Hello Genna,
I'm with you on this. I used to love flying and the whole journey used to be the adventure. Now it has been reduced to a chore.
There has been a huge increase in Cruise ships numbers of passengers as they turn away from the chaos of air travel.
I think Boeing have made a clever move with the 787 Dreamliner. It's whole design is harking back to a more glamorous era.
Very interesting hub, and you bring up some excellent points: The boredom of flying: Some seats are smaller than others, depending on the aircraft, and can present us with scrunched sitting for several hours as we nibble on stale, over-salted peanuts. The airport experience: Jostling and scrambling at security checkpoints, endless lines, and frustrated airport employees who glare at you with their “what’s the big problem?” eyes.
Flying is something I have begun to dread because it has become such a hassle. We have become a number…or a grain of sand on the beach to be moved from one point to another, quickly and efficiently. It would be a nice reprieve to be able to step into the “new world” of the 787; something to actually look forward to during the flying experience. :-)
Hi Jen,
How interesting and they say they don't profile hey?
My daughter is in Lebanon at the moment, she is married to a lovely Lebanese chap and she really likes the country.
We are going there for a holiday as soon as Linda feels up to it. Do you get back there often?
The 787 looks great and Linda has the same problem as you, after a few hours she just wants to get off the plane. How odd, I wonder if there is a remedy?
It was a question I asked the airlines after 9/11 when I traveled to Paris, let's just say it got pretty heated due to my ethnic background, I am Lebanese.
I would love to take a ride in one of these 787's I get quite claustrophobic in a plane setting. I don't like the fact I can't get off the ride, besides I always get stuck sitting to the world's most obnoxious person.
Hi jenubouka,
You will get to see the first class cabin as you pass through to economy with the rest of us lol.
But never say never, one day a first class ticket may arrive and you can go fly in this stunning aircraft.
It does look swish.
Where do you find this stuff out 'they won't let your carry on be a parachute they think you are a terrorist. Found that out...
Are you undercover lol
Hello Dale Hyde
It has been designed with optimum space in mind, and as it is a wide bodied aircraft, you can have these high ceilings.
Actually the more I think about it, it is ingenious and I am surprised no one else thought of it before Boeing.
How weird, thanks for your very insightful comments.
Hello poshcoffeeco,
Did you see the technical specifications link, Ah Drool! It really is a very smart aircraft too lol.
Thanks for the congratulations. I was very pleasantly surprised.
Hello Theresa,
Your dalliance has been much appreciated, thank you.
I do know that feeling of having to prepare and write for your new cohort. I would do just about anything rather than get down to it.
Discipline Ms.T
That's the answer and a strong pot of coffee.
Good luck for the new term.
Michael
Way cool, and I think the pic of first class is the closest I will get to it.
It still missing the emergency parachutes for the plane as well as passengers.
By the way they won't let your carry on be a parachute they think you are a terrorist. Found that out...
Such a well thought and written hub!
A great hub! I look at the photos and this is quite a different type of aircraft than the ones I have flown in. Very spacious looking. I would presume that the design has a lot to do with the "feel" of possibly more space than there actually is. Thanks for the hub!
molometer you will have the anoraks going wild. They will be kicking themselves they didn't get in first. There is nothing like an interesting hub. (This is an interesting one)
BTW congratulations on your top 100 place for new hubbers!
Michael-
Oh, I think you have several marbles left. :) I love your categorization of the Hub as in the "Aviation Weekly" style. And I am quite sure there is such a publication, as many industries have their own in-house magazine.
Speaking of writing, my somewhat over-the-top, promiscuous dalliance with HP has got to shift into low-low-low gear. (Well, how's that for mixed metaphors in a single sentence - promiscuous dallying and shifting gears??)
Back to the point I was trying to make before my own words distracted me. Classes start Monday- I am excited, I am depressed. I love the classroom experience, but I am quite sure the weekly hours of grading will cut into my HP play time (I mean intellectual discourse hours, of course).
In about an hour I am going to force myself to write the three syllabi for my courses. Doing that and polishing all the ancillary materials for the first week of classes will take about the next 30 hours. Then to bed and then back to school. :)
Wow - I really wandered far afield that time. I usually try to convince my students that their tangents on an exam are a problem, but that my tangents in the classroom are evidence of a creative and brilliant mind. They seldom seem convinced. :)
Theresa
Hello gogogo,
It does look fabulous, and it seems like Boeing are trying to return to a more glamorous age with this aircraft.
Anything that makes us feel more comfortable has got to be good.
Hello Theresa,
You did it again, made me lol.
I am glad you liked it, and now know what the insides of a 787 Dreamliner looks like, should you ever want to get on one. ha ha.
I haven't completely lost my one last marble.
I wanted to see if I could write something interesting, useful etc, about a topic that would put most people to sleep. ha ha
I don't suppose it will get many views. Who would want to know about an airplane apart from plane spotters.
I really did enjoy writing it. It was a lot of fun finding all the facts.
The style of this hub, is what I would call very 'Aviation Weekly' if there was such a publication. There probably is?
My one last marble remains intact. lol
Have not flown on one yet, but looking forward to the time I do
Very interesting. Don't expect I will ever fly on one, but its nice to know that if I wanted I could. :)
Wow that is really interesting. What did you think of the new layout? I know it is designed to be spacious. Does it harken back to the glamorous days of flight?
Actually rode a mockup of this plane at a Boeing Plant Tour in Everett, Washington. Quite spacious inside. Voting this Up and Interesting.

Hello Laura Stokes,
It really is an impressive aircraft. Glad you enjoyed the spec sheets. Nice to hear from a fellow enthusiast.
