Explain Dreams What Do They Mean?
Last night I had a dream about a removal truck arriving at my house and it was full of packing boxes; what does a steamer trunk symbolize in dreams? Like most people I wanted to find out
The dream continued and I was a little perplexed as my house is already full of furniture and the usual stuff of the 21st century.
I told the removal guys that they would have to put it in the garage. Good luck with that task, a 40 foot trailer contents into a 20 foot garage?
I stood there and watched as they began loading the boxes, neatly into the garage.
Detailed Dreams. The Elements
The boxes themselves were very specific in terms of size.
They were the size of box; that would hold about 30 paperback size books.
I do have some books still in boxes from the last move. I moved about 6 months ago.
The second part of the dream involved our daughter,
She is staying with us at the moment and she will be flying home at some stage.
Like any modern young lady she has huge steamer trunks that she is going to take on the plane.
It is going to cost her a fortune in excess baggage.
I think this is crazy and she should send it by cargo ship?
What Does It Mean?
I awoke and it was still very clear in my mind and I suppose the same as most people I guess I wondered what it all meant. So I thought about it and I came to some conclusions.
The dream did not disturb me as such. It was more on the level of the feeling you get when asked “would you like tea or coffee” That was about the level of concern.
What do these symbols mean and is my interpretation of it in line with other people or unique to me?
And this got me thinking about the interpretation of dreams and the whole symbolism surrounding the dream and dreamer. So I went to the source:

It Means What! Freud Jung or Adler Take Your Pick
Let's listen to Freud!
“With the application of this technique every dream will reveal itself as a psychological structure, full of significance, and one which may be assigned to a specific place in the psychic activities of the waking state.”
Ch 1 The Scientific Literature of Dream-Problems (up to 1900 )
The Interpretation of Dreams Sigmund Freud (1856 – 1939)
First published in German in November 1899 as Die Traumdeutun
So what exactly does that mean?
First problem, it is an interpretation and therefore inexact.
Freud considered that dreams as a subject was worthy of study. He stated that to further understand his patients he would need other techniques. So he developed and has been credited with being the inventor of psychoanalysis?
Freud has been both attacked and deified in equal measure but I will leave that for others to comment on.
When Freud was writing his groundbreaking work on the interpretation of dreams he had no internet, TV or even radio, there was of course the literature of the ages but no codified or collected knowledge regarding the subconscious mind and I think this is Freud’s most important contribution. People started talking about dreams and taking the subject seriously.
So where did the idea come up that there is an idea of a “shared symbolism” ? Not from Freud.
The three founders of modern Psychology are Freud, Jung and Adler.
All modern dream interpretation is built on the shoulders of these giants. In fact a whole industry has developed explaining dreams. Today dream interpretation has become big business.
Any understanding of your dreams would be helped by reading these great men's contribution, to this, the most difficult of the sciences. The study of humans.

Cultural Dreams
Shared Symbolism In Dreams
Do we share a common symbolism or do different cultures have different interpretations of symbols.
In indigenous native american symbols, the buffalo means?
- Provision, Gratitude, Abundance
- Consistency, Strength, Stability,
- Blessing, Prosperity, Provision
- Gratitude, Abundance, Consistency
Ideas Don't Always Travel Well
The above explanation will mean nothing to someone from Australia as they would be unfamiliar with the form or shape of the buffalo. It would be like trying to explain high finance to a Banker?
The same applies in reverse; an aboriginal in Australia trying to describe the kangaroo in her dream to a Indigenous Indian living in the USA will have a hard task.
You can imagine the conversation.
Aboriginal woman. “Well it’s a big animal that looks a little like a mouse but huge and it bounces along and carries its kids....they call their kids Joey's don't ya know...they carry 'em in a pouch made from skin on its stomach.”
Indigenous Indian. “Huh?”
Another difficulty is that they don't speak each others language either.
I guess the the rise in global tourism and the internet is beginning to create a global symbolic language but it is still a baby at the moment and therefore we are still culturally bound up in the symbols we are raised in.
What does my dream mean? I have never had a dream quite like this one before.
I have a few ideas. Maybe the boxes in the garage, represent things that I have dealt with, and have put aside, but don't want to forget. My daughter going away. I suppose there is a little separation anxiety and we want her to be safe and sound, but who really knows? What do you think?

Explaining Dreams Can Get Tricky.
Depending on which psychologist you favour, will influence your interpretation of your dreams.
Some people think that 'you' are everyone in your dream. This makes some sense. But the people populating your dream are 'your' interpretation of those 'people' and not a true reflection of those people at all. Only 'your' view of them.
So to find the clue's to interpreting 'their' actions on 'your' dreams you have to look at your own motivations.
Why do you think, you dream about a particular person in the way you do. As in reality these dream people are projections of yourself?
Hope this helps you to get a handle on your dreams and that you continue you journey, a little better informed. The books listed above are really useful. If you really want to explain and understand your dreams more deeply then check out the sources listed above.

molometer - I've been having a tremendous amount of nonsensical dreams if I happen to wake up and remember some of them otherwise I don't and cannot get back to sleep. Your dream I thought was very logical - as organizing ideas into categories whether you keep them or lose them. I am living in Buffalo, New York and I am very close to the Buffalo Zoo. I actually visit the 4 Bison who face a lush golf course and their enclosure is way too small for these big animals. One came over to me in summer and just looked at me with those gorgeous brown eyes and walked away as if to thank me for the company. I continue to visit. I voted your Hub Up - Useful and Interesting. Good finding you in Hub Pages.
Really you are simply great! I could not be able to remember dreams sometimes and your dreams are really magnificent you described it so well as amymarie_5 said your example of buffalo was really great i really liked it too much meaning of a symbol is not necessary to be same to everyone! Really great dream hub...voted up!
Hi Molometer,
Dreams are fascinating to me. I've always had vivid dreams and l enjoy trying to discover their meanings. I liked your buffalo example. Its true that symbols will not have the same meaning for everyone.
I voted up and useful. Also shared with my followers!
My aunt had a dream that she was walking, and then her foot got stuck in a hole, and when she looked down,it was a grave..so she tried digging her foot out abd a yellow flower came out,she tried to pick it out and then a little girl came out,so she took her to raise her...what does this dream mean?..I need someone who knows the meaning of it to help me..
Now that is interesting... the other night I dreamed a strange dream also, I don't know where it came from as I was not thinking of dragons at the time, but it was evil and scary but I flew on it.. lol I remember being scared in my dream, the thing talked and I don't know the end, I woke up. strange indeed. voted up on your hub... keep it up.
Such a beautiful and Great hub.....Vote up
Wow that was an interesting dream for sure..Maybe representing a new year..out with the old..in with the new..changes..I loved your hub..
I wonder what does it mean if you are floating around in a dixie cup around the New York Statue lol( I have never been there) haha That was one I'll never forgot..I am thinking feeling very small in a big world..may mean I am thirsty..who knows? haha
Have a great day..Great hub!

Hi Michael,
Thanks for your comments. I think maybe the editor held back my comment about your dream. Don't know why. Maybe didn't get to read it right away.
Anyway, a possible explanation.
Val
To Cindy,
If this were my dream and I had experienced issues of abuse in my life as I child, I would interpret it as follows:
My child self is fearful of STRANGE unknown external forces that are threatening her life. They attack her from behind (past experience remembered). My parent self is trying to protect her along with a group of allies in the community (represented by the building). Even though I try to protect her, I fail and am killed, but I am not hurt. Instead I melt into the floor. The floor represents your basic support, your physical life. I think the phrase “floored” is appropriate here, meaning overcome or overpowered by physical forces. It would occur to me that I was confronting my deepest fears in the dream and surrendering to them, after a fight. The surrender part is not a weakness but a dissolving of the fear in your consciousness. The fear has no way of existing within you when you are no longer fighting it.
It is a funny, thing how our unconscious knows exactly how to liberate us from deep anxiety that causes havoc in our daily life. When we hold on to past fearful experiences, they become the aliens or the monsters in our dream. When fear is dissolved the monsters disappear.
Attacked, attacked from behind
Aliens
Fighting
Protecting a child
Overtaken
Killed
Strange, strange
Group of us, allies
Building community
Dissolved onto the floor
Not hurt
Hope this is helpful.
Val
But apparently a good one since she seemed to nail your dream pretty well.
That is really strange. It must have been the time that you were ready for it.
She definitely gave a very detailed interpretation, didn't she? Thanks!
Not the one about aliens! Heck no! Makes no sense to me at all. But I have been plagued by nightmares my whole life. Fortunately not as much as I used to be. I lived in a very abusive situation until I was 18 and able to move out on my own. I'm sure that has something to do with it. I still remember nightmares I had when I was three.
Sometimes I have really strange dreams, many of which I hope have no meaning at all. For instance, night before last I dreamed about being attacked by aliens. A group of us, I didn't know any of the people, were trying to hide in a building. It was overtaken, and as I was fighting to protect a child, I was attacked from the rear and killed. I dissolved onto the floor and it never hurt. Strange huh? And I have not watched a movie about aliens in years.
But then I have some where I can definitely tie into my current life and I can see my mind trying to deal with it.
I never thought about people in different cultures trying to explain dreams to each other. It could be difficult.
Did you ever decide what the dream meant for you?
If this were my dream I would view it as such:
I have stored my memories in boxes and I still have some in my garage. The presence of my daughter visiting has reminded me of more very neatly stored memories that I was not consciously thinking about until her visit. The men with the removal truck represent to me my will to remove these memories. But, I don’t really want to do that, so I have them neatly store them in my garage. They are vivid, detailed and treasured memories that I do not wish to remove. My daughter is attached to what she values so much so that she is willing to pay a fortune to keep them with her. Similarly, I am fortunate to have my treasured memories.
Word associations: Truck, trunk, fortune, treasure
removal - taking something away
truck – vehicle for moving something
my house - comfort stability
packing boxes.- organization
my house - comfort security
full of furniture – comfortable memories
21st century. – newness, not historical, modern
removal guys – willfulness
garage.- storage
boxes neatly – neat storage
into the garage.- storage
were very specific – ordered
30 paperback size books. Memories, reflections
books s history memories
till in boxes neatly sored
daughter, feeling self
flying home happiness
modern young lady aspiring feelings
huge steamer trunks box that carries valuables
cost her a fortune – what is valuable
excess baggage.- too many memories
cargo ship?
Maybe there are parts of your life you chose to shut off, leave in boxes. You know they are there and need unpacking like the ones you haven't touched in 6 months. I am not too sure about the second part though. Luke is a good person to ask about dream interpretation.
I liked this Hub Molometer. Dreams fascinate me.
Great information here! I used to have such brilliant drinks and I swear, I haven't remembered one in well over a year. So odd. I do have a dreamcatcher...maybe it's stealing all of them?
I could only enjoy him on video, but he was great.
I really enjoyed this hub centred around your dream. I admire your style of writing which keeps me captivated to the end. Great subject and well written. Voted up and interesting.
He made many people laugh about the things that hurt him so much. What one word would that be the definition?
He died in 2005.
What Pryor asked of his neighbor whe his monkey assaulted Pryor's ear
Just thinking in terms of there being 30 books in each box. HubPages is doing the Hub Patron of the Arts contest in November and choosing a winner every day of the contest. NaNoWriMo (as it is supposed to be written - oops) is National Novel Writing Month, but it is not just a national thing. The idea is to commit to writing a full novel in the month of November. No editing, just writing. These were the first things to come to my mind when I was reading about your dream and the fact that you noticed the boxes could hold 30 books. Could be a fluke. Could be synchronicity, which is Jungian rather than Freudian, but you get the idea. :)
Remember Richard Pryor and his neighbor's monkey?
I believe when it comes to interpreting dreams, you should trust your first and strongest impressions, but just wanted to point out that November has 30 days, a HubPages contest, and Nanowrimo. :)
Thank you, Hubertsvoice. I got a little off topic, but jfay2011's dream brought this to the forefront for me.
Very well said Amy. I can add nothing else.
Hi molometer, Do you remember the story of the chimp that an individual owned in the states that tore the face off her best friend? The friend lived and underwent a face transplant. There was nothing left. The chimp was killed. The sad thing is that the events were unnecessary. The woman who adored her baby chimp was not prepared for his adulthood. I believe wild animals deserve to live the life they are intended...in their natural environment, not for the amusement of lonely, unprepared people. No wild animal is predictable, nor should they be expected to abide by human rules. They belong in their natural habitat. Anything else eventually results in terrible consequences for all involved. I count "terrible" as interfering in the natural life that all wild critters are entitled to. What humanity calls a "good life" is not the same destiny intended for animals.
The owner of the exotic critters had just gotten out of a year in jail and had been accused of cruelty to animals at some point. Why they allowed him to keep them, I'll never know, as the police were called 30 times over animals loose. It was hideous, though, since about 48 animals were killed and only 18 tranquilized and held in the zoo. Really an unnecessary tragedy.
jfay, Are you referring to the exotics that were set free by the owner, right before he ended his life in Ohio? It was very upsetting to me seeing all those beautiful wild animals in a mass grave, some of them classified as endangered species. I hope the laws change in those states that still allow individuals to keep exotic animals.
As always, molometer, your articles are unique, interesting, well-written and thought provoking. Thank you.
I had a dream two or three nights ago about animals escaping a zoo. When i woke up it really happened. That was weird
Maybe it's the fact that you are using Hubpages as a storage facility i.e the boxes, neatly stacked, clear and concise. I think of the mind as storage facility full of compartments, I think Hubpages it a remote storage facility.
Further more I will be going back to the Middle East at some point and the chest in your dream is actually my new Dyson - Joy!
Love your Child x
Interesting hub. If I tried to analyze my dreams I would probably really lose my mind. I dream every night and some of them are like Grade B action movies. When I am not ding that I am trying to find my way home!
Are ya feelin' a little boxed in there Buddy?
There is such an elegant flow to your writing Mike. I do hope you write those books that you have written the titles to. I'd buy them all in a heartbeat!
I think the dream means that at some point in the day you saw a box/boxes and maybe heard conciously or otherwise about someone moving. Failing that, you've had enough with Natalie lording it around the place and wish she'd bloody move! LOL!!! (Obviously I'm just kidding Nat) Those are my non-expert observations.
Love you all!!
