Fluffy Buck And Ben !

You never know what is going to happen when you step out of your front door.

I like that idea, as I have had some very interesting results by doing just this simple action.

We decided to go shopping for groceries, when I say we.

I mean my wife Linda, daughter Natalie and me, Michael.

We were driving around to the mall in the glorious Cape Town sunshine, to the local Spar and having a blast as always.

We got out of the car into the balmy South African sunshine, and were walking towards the supermarket.

My girls noticed a silvered haired, bearded man with a couple of tressel tables.

It had a wire framed box on top, full of little mongrel puppies.

Now Linda and I hadn't owned a dog in years.

In fact, since we started producing our own little offspring.

Find A Pet Dog? Huh!

Looking for a dog was definitely not on the shopping list.

Anyway Natalie and Linda stopped and were petting the dogs.

They were talking to the stallholder, who was very engaging and was telling them the dog 'rescue' story?

I wasn't paying much attention, too busy admiring Table Mountain in the distance.

Fassman (the German stallholder) had been telling the girls, the tragic start in life the pups, had had.

I distractedly heard snippets of the conversation, until Linda said 'can't we have one' at which point I was fully engaged.

I turned to see what was happening. Then Natalie said, 'I really like this one'

O dear, what is going on here? Now totally engaged and ears wide open, I listened as Fassman regaled us again with their tragic story.

What are we going to do with 3 dogs?

Fluffy Buck and Ben are going to be for life.

Not just something we should get involved with, without careful, considered thought!.

I might as well have been talking to the wall, as the girls were smitten.

Guguletu,Cape Town South Africa

The Dogs Story

Fluffy Buck and Ben it turns out were 3 brothers and were lucky to be alive.

They were found in Guguletu Township, under a rain soaked cardboard box, with their gravely ill mother.

They were undernourished, covered with mange and fleas and hanging on to life.

Listening to Fassman. It made me wonder, where was the law for animals?

They were found and rescued by Fassman who runs a local SPCA affiliate, Animal Shelter.

The dogs had been very lucky to be found.

The SPCA dog shelter had paid for all their treatments and vaccinations, and while they were still not fully fit.

They had a chance of a normal life.

Well what are you, going to do?

Linda liked one pup, and Natalie liked another pup, so that left one pup, and me.

After a lot of humming and haring, the girls decided they wanted the two pups. We still hadn't been shopping yet?

Fassman then plays the trump card. 'Well you know, they are brothers. We would like to keep them together'

Everyone looks at me!... What? I was just going shopping!

When Money Is Tight

Of course we decided to adopt the two dogs, and foster the third.

I was still holding out.

Some sense of rationalism, had to come from someone.

Not Just For Christmas

We had noticed that after every Christmas, that there would suddenly be packs of dogs running the streets.

These were not your average 'missing pet', but animals that had just been abandoned. Obviously these dogs, had been poorly chosen 'gifts', by deeply misguided people!?

Now when things get tight economically, the first thing to go, are extra mouths.

Dogs are kept in South Africa and some other countries, primarily as guard dogs or early warning systems.

They are, in many cases, pets as a secondary consideration.

When people fall on hard times, which is becoming more common in SA, and elsewhere at the moment.

The first thing to go, is that extra mouth. The dog.

Either that, or they are left to fend for themselves.

This is where the SPCA service is invaluable.

Their policy is, never to put down, a healthy dog.

Humane services are only employed in cases, where the animal is suffering, with no possibility of recovery..

We decided to take the dogs home. (like I had a choice)

When the time came to decide, to keep the fostered third dog, it was a done deal.

Fluffy Buck & Ben had a rough start in life, but had found a home, with 3 people that loved them. Yep! me too!

Owning a dog is a big commitment. Next time you are looking for a dog for sale!

Why not visit the SPCA and adopt a dog instead. Everyone's a winner!

Like any pet, dogs should not be taken on; without careful consideration. And never ever, given as a Christmas or birthday present.

The Society For The Prevention Of Cruelty To Animals (SPCA) is a charity financed by public donations. And run predominately by volunteers.

It is open 24/7, 365 days a year. Animals don’t keep business hours.

They don't know that it’s after-hours or a public holiday. The SPCA is ready and waiting to help.

Hello Sharyn's Slant,

We had a terrible time when we had to leave. It was a nightmare for all of us but there was no alternative. We tried to take them with us but short of doing something dodgy we couldn't.

I still miss them. Crazy dogs eh!

Fantastic, a very happy hub indeed. The line "Everyone looks at me!... What? I was just going shopping!" Is something that I think all men in a long-term relationship can get! lol

Thanks for SHARING, voted up, funny and awesome.

Great story Michael ~ I could just see you standing there getting won over by the girls. It works every time, ha. Sorry to hear you had to give the "kids" up due to circumstances that were not in your control. They were lucky to have you as their family for as long as they did.

Hi Rosemay50,

Well done on taking all three kittens. It is impossible to choose really.

We were unable to bring the dogs back as they carried a disease that was notifiable. We had 8 great years with them and that will stay with us. they went to good homes as well so although it was painful at least we knew they were going to be well cared for.

A lovely story, you are just a big softy at heart.

We took our dog from PNG back to the UK with us, although he was in quarentine for months, but we had regular visits

My dughter then wanted a kitten the RSCPA had a litter of three, of course if we only took one it would miss the others and if we took 2 then the third would be lonely, so we finished up with all 3, suckers or what. Lol

Hello Theresa,

Stasia sounds like a really useful cat to have around.

A kind of mobile foot warmer lol.

Glad you enjoyed reading about the boys. They were wonderful dogs. We had 8 great years with them.

Unfortunately we were unable to bring them back to the UK. It was very painful to leave them in SA, but we know they went to a good home.

We tried, but their medical issues meant it was a no go.

Thank you Tammy,

It is amazing that people can just abandon these animals when there are many services that can help.

The SPCA will keep all healthy animals until a home is found.

They are very thorough and vet all new owners (custodians) of their animals.

Every potential person has to sign a contract, that if they leave the country, or find that they can no longer take care of the animals. The animals must be returned to the SPCA. It is such a brilliant system and things work out well for all concerned. And the animals are well cared for.

It is such a great system it should be available worldwide.

Oh, Michael- Your story made me get up and go find each of my four cats and love all over them. They were thrilled at the extra attention.....they have gotten used to thefact that when the computer is on they are not going to get much attention. One of the cats, Stasia, actually sleeps at my feet while I am typing. Of course I regularly forget she is there and trip over her when I get up.

When my sons still lived at home we had dogs and they were wonderful (of course we had a fenced in yard then). I enjoyed the dogs immensely, but now that it is just me, I am very happy with my menagerie of four rescue cats. :)

Nice story. And even nicer because it is true. :) Theresa

Very sweet story and brave undertaking. I used to take every stray I ever found home to my mother. We had so many pets. When people needed a dumping place for pets, they started tying them to our front porch. Now, I don't have any pets since I have a young child, but I have four stray cats that I feed every day. One giant orange cat used to be someone's pet. It is fixed and sadly declawed. She cannot defend herself. I suspect that someone abandoned her when they moved. Very sad, but you are a hero to those 3 pampered pooches. Well written!

Thanks Flora,

I am glad to hear that you cat was OK too.

They rely on us so much and we are lucky to have them in our lives. No matter for how long or short.

That an animal can become part of the family is incredible in itself.

Quite right. Animals don't know when it is a holiday or the evening. My vet is on a 24-hour call (or another vet is) so that if an emergency comes up, like what happened when my cat had an allergic reaction to a vaccine, there was time to save the animal.

Thanks for sharing this wonderful story.

Hello always exploring,

I cannot take any credit, I was the grouch at first, seeing the long term aspects of owning 3 dogs. I melted after they came home with us and they were so funny too.

Right little characters.

Thanks Femme,

Dogs are so much more than just pets, and it is only by living with them that we learn this.

They have characters and many other aspects that only dog owners understand.

When we watch them performing it is a real eye opener.

Michael,

This was such a fun story to read! I loved the whole thing!

Dogs can, and do, make great additions to loving households, even if they're very busy ones. I haven't met one yet that hasn't been worth the time and investment to make life richer.

This was a wonderful way to share how that happens.

Thank you!

Hello rsusan,

That sounds like an excellent idea for a hub. I look forward to reading it.

Wonderful, heartwarming hub, molometer. In your Table Mountain hub comments I mentioned that I am housebound due to illness. We can't have dogs where we are living now and I miss that terribly. But I can tell you a 'dog-and-human-kindness' story about a guy who brings his 2 dogs for a therapeutic visit with me every single week...perhaps I should leave that for a new hub sometime.

Hello jenubouka,

I think it is a terrible shame that people mistreat animals. After all these years and laws protecting animals it still goes on.

Thank you for your warm comments also.

Hello Linda,

They had a charmed life, from the moment when they met you and Natalie. Me too!

Sibling rivalry does indeed exist as does a pecking order in all nature.

Why are we so surprised, when it occurs in humans?

Glad you liked my little story.

jenubouka profile image

jenubouka Level 8 Commenter 4 months ago

Oh how this story warmed my heart. What a brave soul to take in all three, and it is a problem here where I live. It also is an issue with maltreated pets as well, some homes will tie a 3 foot chain to an innocent animal for mere intimidation and the animal is subjected to a life of no love or play.

Your family members are truly blessed, I think they may have found you.

Hello Moonlake,

lol baby chicken, that cracked me up. Glad you liked the story.

Linda 4 months ago

Oh miss my boy's, They were so much fun to watch, how they sorted out the pecking order. And sibling rivalry does exist within the canine world, & I would not have seen that, if I was not the owner... if only for a short time.

Beautiful dogs and what a nice story. My son and I did that one time. In a mall and this lady had two cute puppies, my son ran right to them. He took one and another lady took the other. Of course, he ask first and I said yes. We than had to tell my husband. He said " Well, it's not as bad as the baby chicken you brought home one time."

Hi Just Ask Susan,

I just saw the headlines the other day, about the massive rise in abandoned dogs. I thought, maybe a more positive story might help.

People really must be more thoughtful, when buying pets.
