Au Isn't It lovely

Gold in England? Just in case you didn't know AU is the chemical name for Gold.

For probably the first time in recorded history Gold is actually useful for something other than hoarding.

Gold has been mined and refined for many thousands of years.

It has financed the rise of nations. It's accumulation and possession the led to the subjugation of whole continents.

So how would you like to get in on the latest gold bonanza?

The oldest golden treasure in the world, dating to 5,000 BC, was discovered at the Varna Necropolis Bulgaria Wikipedia)

Apart from it's use as gold coinage and the odd pocket watch cover, not to mention jewelery for adornment; over the centuries it has been pretty useless for anything else.

As a store of value it is unsurpassed. Whenever economies start falling to pieces, and currencies begin to fail, everyone buys gold.

The gold business has been around long before the invention of money.

I dare say it will still be around when money is dispensed with altogether.

Finding Gold Today.

Satellites, Cell phones and Computers use vast amounts of gold. What effect do you think this is this having on the worlds gold supply?

The price is shooting through the roof and has been for over 2 years with no sign of slowing down anytime soon.

Meanwhile the phone companies are knocking out new cell phone models every 3 months and what happens to your old cell phone?

It usually gets passed to your mum or dad, sister or brother or worse ends up in the drawer gathering dust. Of course your cell phone provider will offer you an upgrade but is it really a good deal.

You may have had your phone for 2 years in which case you have paid for it twice already.

If they offer you some money on your old phone it had better be a good offer, as there are plenty of companies out there who are also after your phone.

We Are Not Amused

Where Is A Crow Bar When You Need One

Gold Rush England

Gold prospecting in England, rocking it old school. Well before we start we better have a chat with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

Because she owns the rights to all gold ore in Britain through her business wing. The Crown Estate who own the rights to all the gold in the UK

Once Her Majesty has kindly given you permission to go a panning and a mining and you still have your head attached to your body.

You then have to get the permission of the person that owns the land where you want to go prospecting and it doesn’t end there.

The person who owns the land or streams may not own the rights to the minerals on the land or in the rivers and streams so you will have to hunt them down and get their permission.

OK we have all the permissions we needed now lets head for them thare hills. Source detecting.org.uk

Hey don't shoot me. I am just the messenger. This way of getting your hands on some gold is for the birds. We need to gear up and go 21st century on this thing.

This May Take A Little Time

There's Gold In Them Thar Phones

Why Not Visit Gold Mine, NC, USA?

Gold Mine -
Gold Mine, NC, USA
[get directions]

There's Gold In Them Thar Hills

This is how they used to do it before TV, Facetube and the Interweb.

OK Mountains are hard and the gold is probably in tiny amounts in some other material like quartz which is also very hard.

Ok so how much gold is there?

Well on average for every 17 tons of gold ore bearing hardish rock you can expect to extract between .51 to 85 grams of gold.

Now that sounds like a lot of hard work. am I right?

OK so how much is that worth. Well at todays prices a gram of gold is about $53

So 85 grams will earn you about $4,505 well hey that’s not bad? But you did have to knock your pipe out to get at it?

OK so you have to do a lot of digging and crushing and then some more crushing and melting. It’s going to take some time.

Well how about we think about it a different way. Instead of going through all that getting permissions and mining and panning and back breaking work

Alternatively we have people deliver to us all their unwanted:-

Cell phones, Computers and other forms of technology that contain gold. And a whole lot more precious metals and useful stuff and we give them a couple of bucks for the pleasure.

There is a real gold mine, sitting in all those old cell phones and other technologies that are unloved and unused it so many millions of cupboards and drawer’s all over the world.

For example. It is estimated that for every 1 usable cell phone, in Britain alone, many people have 3 or 4 old cell phones, sitting around gathering dust when they could be making you cash money. You don't need me to tell you that things are tough out there, so why are all these precious cell phones not making you some extra cash?

Everyones A Winner The Bare Facts Are.

“A ton of cell phones can yield as much as 280 grams of gold, about 140 grams of platinum and palladium, and 140 kilograms of copper.

There’s also plastic and glass that can be recycled from used cell phones.” source pacebutler. Do the math, it's a load of money!

So going by our earlier calculations of $53 a gram our pile of old cell phones may yield 280 g X $53 = $14,840.

That's $10,000 more that digging it out of the ground or panning a stream.

That’s over three times the money with a fraction of the effort and that is without having to dig a dirty great big hole in the ground or stand up to you neck in water all day long.

Secondly that is without counting all the other money from the other precious metals like palladium, platinum and all the copper wire and the plastic that can be sold for recycling.

It’s a win, win, win all round. You make some easy money, the environment doesn’t get ripped to shreds and you are recycling. Your A Green Eco Warrior!

If you still want to hunt for gold, in England in the old fashioned way, then good luck to you.

But you should maybe think of it as a hobby; a reason to get out in the fresh air, because there has always been more gold in North Wales and Scotland.

And precious little in England.

There are more companies than you can shake a stick at clamoring to buy your old phones, so how much are they really worth?

These phone buying companies are spending a huge amount of money in advertising on the TV, Tubeface and the Interknot everyday.

You probably know their jingle too! Do Ba, Do BA, Do Ba De Do. etc

They would not be doing this amount of advertising if there was no money in it. So what are you waiting for. Get your share of the gold rush, cash in today Ka Ching!

Now how can we get our hands on those diamond encrusted gold and platinum coated satellite’s?

Perp Perp! that's my old cell phone, I better just get that.

Hi there Ghaelach,

This is a great idea isn't it. I may do it myself, it is so simple.

Gold trader has a nice 'ring' to it lol

Once you have done the first 50 you should be earning.

Have you linked up your adsense account with webanswers?

If you want to track your earnings check on the accounts page.

This will only show up if you have linked your adsense account.

Have a great weekend too. let me know how you get on!

Hi Mike.

Been looking at your profile on WebAnswers and spoted your link to this hub on gold.

My first question is to myself. How the hell did I miss this one?

Very interesting info and I'll be dropping by and reading your other suggestions.

How many awards do we need before we start earning on WA?

Take care and have a great Saturday evening.

Hello Goodlady,

lol sorry but you did make me laugh out loud. I had the image of 'drawers full of cell phones' pop into my head when I read it and I am not referring to furniture.lol

It made me laugh and for that I thank you. There are so many companies out there, after your old phones, so shop around for the best deal.

Good luck and let us know how you get on next time you are in Italy.

Hello Barbara Kay,

There is more gold in 1 ton of cell phones than 1000's of tons of ore.

It is simply far more economical to get it from these old technologies. Than to dig it up.

Hello Barbara Kay,

Hello Genesis and KaChing! to your hubby.

Sounds like you have massive customer base down in the USA and based on the comments section here. You could clean up. As few people know about this. It is big business here in the UK already.

I was thinking about old TV's the other day too. All that copper!

Go for it. I want 10 % ha ha.

Hi freelanceauthor,

It applies to all cellphones in varying degrees. Prices range from a few bucks to £200 here in the UK. As for the environmental aspects? These companies with the boxes outside are not dumb?

freelanceauthor profile image

freelanceauthor 3 months ago

Wow, interesting hub. No wonder some malls here are placing big boxes with signs to dispose old cellphones without harming the environment. They maybe actually up for the gold other than keeping the environment clean.

Based on your calculation, gold in an old cellphone can even allow you to buy a new one.

I wonder if this applies to all types of cellphones. Voted up. Thanks.

Verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy interestinggggg....

I only recently learned about this--and now, to figure out HOW to extract said gold, and sell it someplace for actual market value, instead of the fractional price that those "we'll buy your old gold..." middlemen will offer... ... Hmmm (I'm in the USA, so things may work differently here...)

Great hub--voted up!

PWalker281 profile image

PWalker281 Level 7 Commenter 4 months ago

Okay, so I won't be extracting gold from my cell phone or laptop anytime soon :-). Thanks for answering my question.

molometer profile image

molometer Hub Author 4 months ago

Hello PWalker281,

Thanks for dropping in and asking this interesting question.

It is indeed possible to extract the gold yourself but it is a very smelly process using some hectic chemicals.

This is really a volume business enterprise. If you had say a ton of phones then you could make $1,000's as mentioned above.

Collecting old phones is another viable option as long as you pay less for them than you sell them on for.

There are many companies that will buy your old kit and I would probably go down that route for one or two items.

To get the precious metals etc from one phone or old computer would make some cash but would take some effort so selling on is the best option.

Thanks PWalker281 very interesting and useful comment. Thanks for the Tweet too.

My relatively new laptop died on me last month, and when I took it into the repair shop, only to be told there was a short in the motherboard and it would be too expensive to fix, the shop owner suggested I bring it in to him to be recycled once I got a new one. I knew I was hanging on to that laptop for a reason!

I know I have an old cell phone packed up somewhere (at least I hope I still have it). Then there's my current one, the batter of which is on its last leg, so I'll be upgrading soon. The question now is, how do you identify the gold in these devices and how do you extract it? Any ideas, molometer??

Very informative and useful (and funny) hub; rated up and tweeted!

See? Here in the South we don't like Yankees. They bombarded our Great Grand Mother when she was on her way to church. Never mind that, the English aristocricy settled our way. They brought the best craftsmen with them. We are reliant upon their descendants to this day.

When the "War Between the States (northern), or "Civil War" (Southern) was over, the norrth ran off with Southern treasures. Gold was one, art was one, turpentine and tar pitch was another. It took England awhile before they realized that tar pitch was obsolete.

I love you, man. I am no tourist!
