Getting Your Hubpages To A Wider Audience With A Little Decorum

This might sound counter intuitive but hubpages is the beginning of your quest for world domination.

If you really want to improve your finance's, then marketing your hubpages to a wider audience should be your short, mid term and long term goals.

If you are one of my followers, and you are not too bothered about getting a wider audience, then this information may not be much use to you. Thanks for dropping in anyway.

If not:-

You really must get your work out to more people.

By that I mean that, It is all very well to sit in the comfort zone that is hubpages, and bask in the mutual adoration. But, that is not, what you really want to be doing.

We are all in this together. We do make good friends here on hubpages. That doesn't mean that we have to write ourselves into a life of penury, or do this for free.

If we want to make this a viable financial concern, we need to work together.

You need your hub-friends to promote your work and they need you too. You must do the same by sharing their work.

it may sound mercenary but this is a business not kindergarten. If you are publishing for vanity then you don't need this advice. If however, you want to make some money you had better get on board.

Hubpages is fun and it has a great community, but it is a business, and we are the product creators.

I could be wrong but I don't know of any successful business, that produces product and just hopes people will drop in and buy it?

Okay I understand. You and I have made some good friends here, but your aim is to reach a wider audience. To do that you need to do some marketing.

Who knows I could be singing to the choir?

Who Knows Where Your Audience Is? Google Analytics Does!

SEO,Titles & Google +

So you have written your hub. You have done your title search and SEO and now everyone who is following you and a few others maybe, have read it and made a comment.

You may have re-edited your hub, as you saw room for improvement. It is time to share it with the world.

If you are unfamiliar with the concepts of SEO and Title issues. The hubs listed below, should help you to understand these ideas.

At the bottom of each hub is a box with links to Facebook, Digg, Reddit, Stumbleupon,Twitter and your followers.

Hubpages put these links there for us to use, To share your work on these social networks. This is an old way of doing things but it still works well.

Google + Meet The Future

Don't forget the Google plus button at the top of the hubpages either. If you haven't got a Google + account yet I would suggest you get one, and pronto.

The big difference on Google+ is that other users actively ask join your 'circles' when they read your content. If they like it. If they don't, they do not join your circles or ask to be in your circles.

You do not have to accept a request to be in your circles, they will still see what you share publicly on Google.

Your circles should contain people that are important to you. So a family circle is private and only viewable by other family members.

You can decide what circles you want. Your readership will still grow without any intervention from you.

So you build a new readership based on the content you have already produced. Your content is 'attracting' and audience, rather than you having to actively market your hubs.

This in my opinion is the way to go. Google spotted this gap in the market and has produced the program G+ that you can use to find your wider audience.

Or more accurately they can find you. This largely depends on those little Google + buttons.

The more people that press those Google + buttons on your hubs the higher your hub is ranked by the Google search algorithm, so putting it in even more peoples views. It is a positive feedback loop.

This is a very clever innovation by Google, as the hub is being ranked by real human 'votes' and not clever manipulation of the search engines.

Remember when you post your new hub, it appears in your followers feeds so you do not have to re-post to them.

Whether you write about knitting or tourist information, about where you live. You need to share it.

While you can wait for organic growth from the search engines, you can give it a little assistance, as mentioned above.

Instead of waiting for months, for the search engines to fully catch on, that your hub is brilliant, as used to be the case.

Using these methods, will speed up the time, that the search engines need, to rank your work higher.

As it is being voted up in real time by real humans. So is considered to be of a higher value.

Careful Placement In Social Networks

Social networks. don't just drop it anywhere. Carefully place it, in an area that it relates to. Use a little finesse!

if you are doing flower arranging drop it into a florists forum or flower arranging site, and leave a comment explaining what your hub is about.

You can do this on as many sites as you like. Just check the sites TOS on placing links.

Most are fine but just check first, you do not want to be seen as a spammer.

Your single hub potentially, could be dropped into countless millions of sites. And it would take years just doing this. So be selective. Go for active sites. i.e.sites that have many active users.

Secondly get the habit of sharing other hubbers work and they will also share your hubs and not just to fellow hubbers.

You need to share other hubbers work to your Facebook groups and other social networks.

Not forgetting Google +. Your friends on these social sites are more likely to read a hub recommended by you.

The same applies to hubbers sharing your work to their networks. Again do not overdo it.

Nobody likes getting a constant stream of hubs whatever the quality. Again be selective and thoughtful about who you share and how often.

Many People Still Use Email?

Put your hubs on your emails that you send, just one hub and targeted. Send hubs to friends that you know will enjoy them and ask them to share them with friends who they think will also enjoy them.

You have something to celebrate and share, you are an active writer, show your friends and ask them to pass it on.

Eventually you may want to leave, some of this type of marketing behind. It is a good place to start and to learn, how to do a little internet marketing.

It is however, the old way of doing things and it does still work. For how much longer is debatable.

When you start to harness the power of Google+, and you have been using it for a few months, you will see your organic growth increasing.

Google + is the future of social networking and organic growth is their stated goal.

For comparisons sake. My organic growth is currently just under 12% of page views in less than 3 months.

I don't know if that is a good or bad growth rate but it proves that it works. I have also picked up several hundred readers too?

For some reason I am very popular in Indonesia? As seen from my Google Analytics. Who knows but it is interesting.

Getting in now on Google+ plus gives you an advantage as you have the opportunity to grow your readership while this social network is still relatively new.

Good luck and remember to earn while you learn. Time is too precious to waste.

Getting Your Hubs Out There

Hubpages gave us a user friendly platform and the opportunity to write. in many cases for the first time in a public forum. We get very positive feedback from each other, we comment and encourage each others development as writers.

If you are serious about getting your message or ideas 'out there'. Then you have to market your hubs. It takes a little more time, but it can very interesting too!

Share your work with a wider audience. Hmm! This may seem daunting at first, and for some, too much of a leap. Give it a try. What have you got to lose?

We have written, so that others would read our ideas and thoughts. Then its simply a matter of magnitude really.

What is the difference between a couple of 100 or 1000's or even millions of readers? If you put these simple ideas into action. You too will be astonished by the number of readers you will get, from all over the world. Just by doing the above.

Your views, are still your views, no matter how many people read them. Publish and have fun.

Your audience may be much wider than you can possible imagine. This simple social marketing puts your hubpages within their sight. And its free!

Hi TIMETRAVELER2,

It's not so much the hackers to worry about as the social networks themselves! They sell our data. My question to Facebook was. Why they do not, pay us for our data and content?

You make a valid point.

TIMETRAVELER2 profile image

TIMETRAVELER2 Level 6 Commenter 3 months ago

I think it has gone way too far already. What I don't understand is why people would put so much personal and private information out there. The hackers must be salivating! These two giants are heading for a fall...it may take awhile, but they'll get there. I can't even figure out how to sign up for G+ and am not sure I want to!

molometer profile image

molometer Hub Author 3 months ago

Hello TIMETRAVELER2,

Google is pushing it's new social side G+ hard and they will rank anything you put up there higher, in searches.

Facebook has just announced, that they are going to be selling shares? How long before the whole thing falls apart is an interesting thought.

TIMETRAVELER2 profile image

I agree that our work needs to go beyond the hubpages readership. However, I don't trust Facebook and Twitter and have terminated my accounts there. I looked into Google+ and it seemed they weren't ready yet for new members. It can be very frustrating, but I will try to do more. For me, it's all about having my voice heard. The money is icing on the cake. We'll see what develops. I have much to learn, that's for sure. Thanks for the great tips. Voted up and useful.

Hi ytsenoh,

Thank you for your lovely comment on this hub. I know the marketing aspect, is not everyone's cup of tea.

I am looking forward to the James Joyce hub. I really enjoyed your last hub on this misunderstood writer.

Joyce himself, I'm sure would have loved to get his work to a wider audience. He had some unfortunate early reviews. This led to his work being perceived as 'difficult' by a wider public? It persists to this day!

Sometimes things worth doing are difficult. By persevering we learn something new.

First, our dear molometer, thanks very very much for this write-up. I'm still struggling with my James Joyce piece, so it may not be out until late February! You are very correct in stating this is a business in many respects for a good amount of contributors. When I do come across an article I like, I post it on my facebook page or e-mail it to friends. Sometimes when I read some of the pieces, I wonder how many people do actually know it's a place for articles that are well presented such as this one. Some people think this is a blogging site and nothing more. Those of us who work hard at what is contributed know with patience and LOTS of hard work, it can become something viable. Thanks very much for the marketing reminder, including the information you share concerning Google+. I agree that social networking has a very strong following and it has a lot of powerful effects as well. Thumbs high on the tutorial and reminder.

Thanks for your interesting question. The purpose of those share buttons, is to share. We are a social network.

You see a hub you like, or you have written yourself and you send it to your fellow hubbers, friends, family or a social group, that is interested in that particular topic.

Wherever it is, on Facebook, Google etc.

Those people may read it and think, Hmm! some of their friends might also like it, and then, they share it.

About the social networking....do you mean we can drop a link to someone's hub directly into the place to post on a facebook page? Hi sgbrown,

Hubpages is unique. I haven't found another site where everyone is so supportive. That's what makes it special.

We shouldn't forget as well, that hubpages itself has over 200,000 active writers and I believe over 2,000.000 followers.

Marketing to a wider audience is essential to the health of the whole community. Those 2 million followers want something to read, so it's win win win.

Hello Linda,

You hit that g+ button just the once and a little box will appear where you can write a comment to your followers on google.

When you update one of your hubs or feel that you need to share it. Just share it. The dialogue box comes up to warn you (not to do it too much) which is fair enough.

Hope this helps. Sharing is caring after all.

Molometer-I have to admit that I use the buttons at the bottom of my hubs but not the google one. Is the google button the one with the + sign on it at the top? Do I just hit this after I publish a hub? Also, can you hit the google button everyday for hubs or just once. I also noticed the other day that when I hit the share with followers button that a message popped up that said it wasn't a good idea to do this. I assumed it meant that only readers can hit that button for other writers. There are so many nuances' on hubpages that it gets confusing.

This is another great hub, molometer! I wish I had more time to do all the things that need to be done, and even more to do all the things I want to do. But you have driven home yet again the necessity of doing this, and how important it is. Thanks so much for SHARING your thoughts in this area!

Thanks Zainnisar,

they did? really that sounds so silly.

We still know who each other are, so we carry on sharing. That is what they want us to do anyway?

That is why all those buttons are there at the bottom of each hub?

Keep up the good work. Don't worry we are not doing anything wrong and hubpages will figure that out eventually.

Thanks for SHARING

Hello writeronline,

Your hubs are very well written and interesting. Who knows but with a little SEO tweaks would find a massive audience I am positive.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

You are absolutely right, marketing is essential if we want to reach a wider audience.

Thanks for confirming these concepts.

Molometer I would like to meet you some day, Great Hub once again. Social media is a good source of marketing and its free as well but its not easy to have audience on your profile either on Facebook or twitter.

Sad news for Thanks for SHARING club as HubPages have unpublished that hub.

I had positive impact on my hubs but its gone, any how Thanks for SHARING.

Thanks for this molometer. Very helpful for someone like me; been writing for years, but still struggling with the SEO aspects. Without which, as you say, Hubs are simply an exchange of pleasantries with like-minded individuals.. I will try to implement these steps (along with others of yours I've previously bookmarked).

Thanks again.

Hi Rajan,

Google+ is definitely the way to go. It gives you access to millions of searches a day and the more we use those buttons the higher your ranking in google search itself.

This is a stated aim of Google. Once you have started to use it for a few weeks check your name on Google search you will be amazed.

Thanks for SHARING too.

Hi always exploring,

Thanks for dropping in. It is a mystery to me why people are surprised when they have people coming to read their poetry as you say.

BTW Poetry is very popular on the internet over 60 million searches per month.

So don't be surprised if people seek out your poems. They are very good.

A great hub which was easy to read and understand. Most of the marketing strategy articles I have read have been over my head as I am new to all of this. I use twitter and facebook already. I never really understood Google +, but after reading this I will definitely be looking into getting an account. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and tips. Voted up and useful/interesting.

Hi gogogo,

You are not alone. Many people do not understand the new Google circles idea.

You will find that people will read your work and ask to join your circles.

You 'do not' have to accept them. They will still see your posts but you will not have to interact with them if you do not want too.

I have 136 in my circles. 166 have me in their circles but I have 482 that actively follow me and who knows how many in the 'public' group. I have only been on there a few weeks?

The idea of the circles is to compartmentalize your various groups.

You can separate your private family and friends from your public profiles if you want to.

This is a useful feature.

Hi Flora,

It was rather odd, but that I suppose is one of the aspects of Google + ?

Some people are still not clear about how it works.

I have people requesting to follow me everyday on G+ and I check their profiles but most I do not follow back.

If they follow me they get my posts. That is after all the whole point of G+

He needs to read the manual lol

Thank you for your help again.

It did cover a few issues but I felt just do it once and it's done.

Thanks for SHARING this makes so much sense.

What made the situation extra odd is that the hub you shared was one that is a great help for HP people. It's not like he asked to stop being informed about political hubs.

Hi Flora,

And thanks for your support on the Google plus issue. I still don't fully get why people will follow us and then moan when they get posted?

I get it with Facebook, I rarely go there except to keep up with family birthdays and stuff.

I have created a couple of pages there, where I post too.

I tend not to post to my family and friends unless it is pertinent to them.

They get annoyed PDQ if you keep dropping hubs on them.

I have found however that I have loads of readers in Indonesia? Go figure!

I guess the thing I am suggesting is find a group that shares your hubs interest and drop a hub in there occasionally. It works for me.

Bottom line.

Forget your family and friends.(for posting purposes)

Search out groups on Facebook that share your interests and drop something into them.

I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

Thanks again for the Google thing. I really don't get these people that follow and then moan. What trip are they on?

Nice to hear from you and for posting a very important question.

Michael

I don't have any family members on google+. I only joined to advertise my writing. I only returned to Facebook to advertise writing. Of course, I have to make comments in general or I annoy people on FB. And I generally only post entertainment and poetry hubs there. I do not post my economy hubs there as they don't interest my friends.

But I am not interested in FB for social reasons. I prefer the telephone when I live near the person.

One of the reasons why my parents joined this site is so that I don't have to email them when I publish something. HP does it for me.

I have emailed other people's work to people before. I feel odd emailing my friends with my work when the hubs are not on my cat or music. No point. and I would be just annoying them otherwise.

Hello Vellur,

I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how this system all fitted together.

I am that kind of person. I am a teacher by profession.

When I found out how it worked the obvious thing for me was to share it with my followers.

We are all trying to do the same thing and if I know something helpful I will share it.

You will find on hubpages many professional teachers and they are just like me. If they find something like how to get your hubpages to a wider audience or anything that is helpful they share it.

If you look at my followers you will see many professional educators and our prime motivation is to teach.

No matter what it is. We are just built that way.

Glad you found this hub helpful. I have many more hubs covering other aspects of working on the web in general and hubpages in particular. Drop over and check them out.

Hello vocalcoach,

Thanks for dropping in and asking a very useful question.

The Google + button is that little blue button top right of each hub. It has a +1 on it and it's blue.

When you press that a little dialogue box will appear asking you if you want to share this hub with your Google friends. Just pick the friends on Google that you want to share with and tick the box and off it goes.

This is where you will see real organic growth in days sometimes just hours. Give it a try. You may already have hundreds of followers and you didn't even know it?

Hi PurvisBobbi44,

It will work for everyone. You have to remember we are humans and we are dealing basically with a machine.

It might be pretty smart but it is still a machine that works on fairly clever maths. When we vote, it counts those votes and assigns your hub a rank.

It not rocket science? Its computer science lol.

Glad you found the ideas useful. Go for it.

Hi Femme,

What a brilliant idea and so simple. As in most things KISS, keep it simple stupid, is a phrase we have used in computing for years.

Everyone wants to complicate things but if we stick to the basics. It just works.

Hello Highvoltagewriter,

The great thing about us humans is that we are cooperative creatures. We succeed by working together.

This has stood us in good stead from the earliest times. And contrary to some opinion.

We are altruistic by nature. We want to help each other.

You only have to think of when tragedies hit some place in the world we will never go.

It doesn't stop us helping out wherever we can.

Don't get me wrong there are some that will freeload but they are quickly jettisoned by the group.

Thanks for a great comment.

Michael,

This has excellent tips. Thank you!

I have business cards with which websites I write for listed on them. They've been a useful and inexepensive way for people to get in touch with me for various projects I've been working on, and in the last several weeks, people have been getting in touch with me to request I do interviews for articles on individuals or groups that interest them.

I'm bookmarking this one, and plan to share it as well.

Excellent job!

Hello Jen,

You have pole position, as the number one comment on this new hub. Glad you found it helpful and useful. We all need to keep up, with this fast moving, social media marketing malarky.

It can make a huge difference to our page views. Especially since Google has made it so much easier to do.

Thanks for the great comments and bookmarking it too. It all helps.
