If you remember the 60's and 70's it was 'different then'

A Metrosexual Definition In Mens Grooming

Men used to be so simple to understand.

If you are a man of a certain age, and you survived the 60’s and 70’s.

Chances are good that you may have worn the odd bit of male make up, even if it was just a little concealer or foundation, to hide the eruptions on your face.

Who can forget David Bowie and his legions of male beauty clones, looking like an explosion in a paint factory?

But like many men, you probably grew out of it, your skin settled down to something less resembling a butcher’s apron.

Now comes the 80’s 90’s and the oughties.

A new breed of men, who want male beauty products and mens grooming, have emerged from the undergrowth.

The Metrosexual

The term was actually coined many years ago.

The term Metrosexual itself, is made from two other words.

Metropolitan and heterosexual, and aims to describe an affluent, urban living young man.

The term originated in an article by Mark Simpson.

Published on November 15, 1994, in The Independent.

Simpson's Metrosexual Definition:

'Metrosexual man, the single young man with a high disposable income, living or working in the city (because that’s where all the best shops are), is perhaps the most promising consumer market of the decade. In the Eighties he was only to be found inside fashion magazines such as GQ'

'He’s everywhere and he’s going shopping'.

The difference between Bowie era male beauty, and their make up, is a million miles away from the modern metrosexual definition of male beauty..

The male make up products that are available today, are so subtle, that most men would not notice other men wearing it.

If we are to believe the hype, that these men really are taking better care of themselves.

The evidence appears to support it.

Then that's okay, isn't it?

Finance And Fragrance's For Men

The vast majority of men in the past, we are led to believe, did not take very good care of themselves.

Maybe they would get a haircut every now and again.

Few men would dream of using a face mask pack, or make up in daily life unless you were an actor on the stage.

But this male beauty phenomenon, is not as superficial, as it may at first appear.

It has more to do with self esteem, self respect and just self!. Wanted to look after yourself better is a simply a great idea.

Metrosexual Finance

The emphasis of Metrosexualism is on the single affluent male with high disposable income.

Apparently these men are looking after themselves better, and enjoying spending their money on the things they want ! Instead of spending their money supporting a family!

This is somewhat of a departure, from the traditional heterosexual male role of husband and provider paradigm, or is it?

There have always been men that cared about their appearance.

Fine fragrance's for men have been recorded throughout history. Many popular male fragrance's tend to mimic a wide variety of fresh and woody tones, including traces of lemon and cedarwood.

Time For A Man Chat !

The metrosexual male.

Is a man that looks after himself, in terms of his personal grooming, attire, diet and fitness.

There is nothing wrong with looking after yourself; after all what can be the harm in that?

Nothing, but the suspicion exist's that there is more to this, than just encouraging men to look after themselves better.

The Metrosexual Business

It’s should come as no surprise then, that the metrosexual male as a 'consumer type'.

Is the main preoccupation of clothing designers, cosmetics companies, fitness gym's, specialist food producers, restaurateurs amongst a myriad of other demands for their attentions.

In fact the metrosexual male beauty business, is now a huge market.

Men may have been largely neglected in the past, by these companies but they are catching on fast.

Maybe we can learn something from these changing trends.

It could be that these metrosexual men, are actually on to something positive for all men?

Male Beauty Tucked Plucked And Sucked Mens Grooming

There are all manner of hair clippers, luxuriating shower scrubs, not to mention diet’s, that are so organically healthy. They still have soil on them.

It makes one wonder, how we managed to survive so long without vitamin supplements, ‘good’ gut bacteria, low cholesterol drinks and getting the fat, out of our diet. and of course hitting the gym daily?

Nobody smokes anymore and if you do; you are looked on as some kind of pariah that has just dragged a corpse into the room.

Having grey hair, is often considered the mark of a man that has let himself go, 'gone to seed'!.

Many men go grey very young, not to mention male pattern baldness. Have these men really let themselves go?

The Hair Dye Experimental

To test the idea, that men's hair colour, can have an effect on the way they are perceived.

I dyed my hair, and went out to a big family dinner.

My extended family and friends asked 'are you going to the gym more regularly'? and commented .

'You look so well? and 'how much weight you have lost'!

No-one spotted the 'conker brown' hair on my head, until my friends wife Denise walked in, and exclaimed!

“What have you done to your hair, you look fabulous”

At which point all the guys said 'wow, didn’t notice that'.

We had been sitting together for 2 hours. Men?

Men in general, do not tend to notice these types of cosmetic changes, much to the annoyance of countless millions of women.

How many times has a women asked a man 'how do I look'?

The man is befuddled, looking all over the woman, trying to figure out what has changed?

The problem is compounded when we take into account 'he probably didn't know what you looked like before either' it's just not that interesting to most men.

This attention to cosmetic details, is not the natural habitat of most men of a certain age.

Maybe now that more men are using male make up and hair dye, they will notice when a woman makes a change to 'her' appearance?

There is a creeping suspicion, that they will be too busy fixing their own make up, to notice anyone else's.

Many women state that in general, men become more attractive as they age.

With the growth of mens grooming, male beauty products and male make up.

For these men the future looks and smells great.

Inspired By Hair Dye?

When I pulled my hair dye stunt, my good friend George was impressed.

He told us that he had been given a gift certificate, for the pharmacy. for Xmas 6 months earlier.

He explained how he often furtively paused by the hair dye display, contemplating buying some hair dye, but had always chickened out!

He said

“You have inspired me. I am going to get that hair dye, and slap it on my head"

That was over 2 years ago. George still hasn’t bought that dye?

What may have started as a marketing guys idea, to get the money out of young impressionable males pockets.

May have unforeseen consequences.

Metrosexualism

Some men seem to have 'evolved' this one time marketing concept, into a full on, life choice.

Joey Essex and Mark Wright, two cast members of the hit TV show The Only Way Is Essex are often cited as examples of Metrosexuals.

Of course there are many more aspects to this trend, than at first meets the eye.

It could be that we are witnessing a sea change, in the way men see themselves in modern society.

Many men have opted to spend more of their money, time and effort on themselves.

In The Natural World

Male beauty display in the animal kingdom, tends to be very apparent.

Consider the striking plumage of male birds, compared to the rather dull plumage of the female of the species.

Maybe metrosexual men are rediscovering or reasserting a more natural persona.

Time to get your peacock on!

Joey Essex Rheeem!

Hi Levertis Steele,

Thank you for reading and leaving an interesting comment.

If looking after yourself is fashionable.

That is a good enough.

Levertis Steele 8 weeks ago

Men who take good care of themselves look great as long as they lean toward the masculine and lay off the feminine. A real woman wants a real man, please! Most women do not want men who look like women. If they are naturally feminine, then that is acceptable because it is real and natural, not enhanced. There is a thin line between homosexual amd metrosexual tendencies. So, real men who prefer women need to use much common sense. There is not anything wrong with a man who takes care of his appearance as long as he is not ridiculous. Real men know how far to go with that.

Hi THEHuG5,

This was a fun hub to write too. It never ceases to amaze me what us humans will get up to.

I will not be plucking my eyebrows or shaving my legs either! lol.

molometer 2 months ago

Hello Curiad,

I am with you on that one, I always leaned towards Sean Connery myself lol.

molometer 2 months ago

Hi ytsenoh,

That's the great thing about the English language. It is constantly evolving.

Glad you liked this little bit of fun hub.

THEHuG5 2 months ago

I'm actually glad that more men are starting to take better care of themselves. I don't think theres anything wrong with doing a face mask or getting a manicure every now and then (no nail polish though please). I wouldn't consider that metrosexual but I do get disturbed when men start arching their eyebrows and shaving their legs. That's definitely not cool. I don't like "metrosexual" men but I do like a manly man who takes decent care of himself.

That joey essez guy is nuts wearing shoes that are too small just to avoid creases! Ridiculous!

This is an interesting and refreshing hub.

Curiad 2 months ago

LOL molometer, I have had a shaved head for 20 years. I am clean but I don't go for all the pimping stuff. I always fancied myself as a sort of Clint Eastwood western kinda guy!

ytsenoh 2 months ago

I love the "I'm too sexy to be metrosexual" comment, absolutely hysterical. What a great subject to write about, molometer. The first time I had ever heard the term was about three years ago. Isn't it interesting how urban living can give Merriam-Webster a few more pages for its book of words? Very interesting and humorous hub. Thank you!

molometer 2 months ago

Hi alocsin,

I am with you on this one, as I shave my head for the same reason. I cannot be bothered with all that fussing around either.

I am too sexy to lol.

molometer 2 months ago

Hi Alecia Murphy,

I think you may have a point. But who would you want to be outside the cave when the sabre toothed tigers are hungry?lol

alocsin 2 months ago

I'm too sexy to be metrosexual.

I actually have almost a shaved head, but only because it's a lot easier to take care of. Voting this hub and interesting.

Alecia Murphy 2 months ago

The metrosexual is the new male animal, one that in its proper place is respectable but gone overbooard is the new caveman! How about someone right in the middle? Now all we need is a name! Great hub!

molometer 2 months ago

Hi Jeannieinabottle,

It really is getting confusing for us chaps too. I don't know whether to dye my hair 'and take 20 years' off of my age or stay grey and pass invisible through life lol Avoiding all the gold diggers that seem to have sprung up in the last 10 years? It is quite dangerous to be a man at the moment! Whatever that is?

Jeannieinabottle 2 months ago

For your poll, you should add as a 4th option:

I am single because I am tired of metrosexuals.

It is a nice idea for men to keep up with their appearances, but it has gotten out of hand. I've dated men that use more hair products than I do (and trust me, that is A LOT!) and men more obsessed with fashion than I could ever be. It is disturbing. There is also a new trend with men really liking chick flicks, but I am getting off topic. Excellent hub and voted up!

blueiiidgirl36 4 months ago

Excellent article.

From the perspective of a female who never really got into all the grooming stuff for women, I was uneasy with this when it began. I like manly men who don't faun over their looks. It is, perhaps, in today's world, part of why I'm still single.

molometer 4 months ago

Hello jeyaramd,

Have you seen these fish in the shopping malls that chew the dead skin off peoples feet?

I wonder what the RSPCA have to say about these poor fish? lol

molometer 4 months ago

Hi jeyaramd,

I must admit too that I have had the odd spa treatment and there is nothing better than a professional shave by a barber with an open razor.

A friend of mine regularly has a pedicure whatever that is?

I agree with you that we must look after ourselves, it is an outward expression of an inner feeling of contentment that we are happy with ourselves.

I do think that there is huge pressures on men now comparable to the pressures that women have had forever. I don't think that is a good thing.

Slapping tons of make-up on always makes me wonder 'what are they trying to hide or convey. A natural look is more appealing to me.

jeyaramd 4 months ago

This is so true. Times are definitely changing. The last time I was at the barber; he asked if I wanted my eye brows done. It felt kind of awkward. I told him its fine. That was an experience. Some of my male coworkers are having their nails done. That was a bit off. No punn intended. Its just not my cup of tea. Perhaps, I couldn't afford those luxuries at the time.

Anyhow, I consider myself to be well groomed. I enjoy taking care of myself. When we love ourselves, we definitely show others how to love us. Its awesome. However, I don't know if I would be considered as groomed as a metrosexual. I think makeup is a no no. A facial and spa is nice. I have to admit that perk. Thanks for the informative hub.

Hi Lady_E,

David Beckham is an icon to the whole metrosexual marketing fraternity. He was modeling along time before he married. He is a brand in his own right really. He has been very famous from a very early age from his football career. Now that he is less active in football he has stepped up the modelling side. If anything I think he has helped his wife's career to last a little longer. Where are all the other spice girls?

Thanks for your interesting comment.

Lady_E 4 months ago

Lovely and unique read.

David Beckham (my favourite footballer) is classed as a Metrosexual... but then again, that could be the influence of his wife.

Interesting. Cheers.

molometer 4 months ago

Hello AudreyHowitt,

Nice to hear from you. As I said in the hub this whole idea is for the birds.

How can you base your life plan on something that was dreamed up in a marketing planning meeting to sell product to a hapless public?

People actually believe the marketing hype that they are metrosexuals. The term was invented in 1992.

AudreyHowitt 4 months ago

I am still with a jeans and flannel shirt kinda guy--guess I am not too hip--and the big plus--no fighting over the mirror

molometer 5 months ago

Hello Brett,

I accept your reasoning for using moisturizer, no really I do lol.

I did the whole shaved head for a few years as I could not be bothered with it in the morning.

However when I was socializing I became aware that people thought I was either some kind of criminal on alternatively some eastern religious mystic.

Now I have gone for the old silver-back look ala gorilla and it seems to be working.

I am considering going the whole hog and grow out a weedy silver ponytail. What do you think, too much? lol

Brett.Tesol 5 months ago

LOL ... good hub. Have to admit, I have always been groomed but not quite to the metro-sexual level. However, now that I'm living in South Korea, the freezing weather has actually mad me turn to moisturizer (either that, or split bleeding skin).

I also solved the hair issue with a razor ... no one can tell now ha ha.

molometer 6 months ago

Ha ha Rosemay,

You said that not me lol

Curious yes... Nosey Never!

Rosemay50 6 months ago

Or maybe we women are just too curious... nosey. Lol

molometer 6 months ago

Hello rosemay,

I suppose it actually proves the point doesn't it.

Most men couldn't care less about grooming apart from the odd hair dye person like your partner and me when I want to scare the locals lol.

I just did a quick count up and women do outnumber men on the the comments section so I guess your right. Man Chat attracts women ha ha!

I had such fun with this hub and maybe we have just confirmed what we all suspected.

Metrosexualism is not very popular at all?

Rosemay50 6 months ago

Hi molometer My partner is very casual but he does dye his hair and worries about pimples. Lol

But most men don't realise that they do suit grey or white hair, they sort of grow into it. But it all part of that age thing and not wanting to look old.

I think mores ladies have come and commented in your male chat hub. Lol. Yes we are interested in our men... :-)

molometer 6 months ago

Hi Jen,

I can't imagine many women putting up with a guy that hogs the make-up mirror.

Not attractive to watch someone... think I'll stop right there lol

molometer 6 months ago

Hi always,

I think that our children are much more likely to go for the hair dye than I would. I know my boys wouldn't bat an eyelash either lol

jenubouka 6 months ago

I love this it is so true. I had to giggle about the hair dye, which I know men do contemplate among other things to spruce up their outer image.

Though if a guy takes longer than me to get ready for the day it's a deal breaker. Awesome!

This is great stuff. My Son called and said, " My hair is more blond than ever " I told him it was because he was outside mowing so much, the sun had lightened it. That's when he told me " No, not the sun. I got it out of a bottle " HaHa.. I loved it...Cheers

molometer 6 months ago

Personally I like to call mine silver threads lol. Mine were foisted on me in my early 30's.

I have earned my grey hairs; and, it is easier to get a crew cut to hide them.

molometer 6 months ago

Hi Tom,

I am with you on this one too.

I even wash once a month whether I need it or not lol

I'm afraid their marketing malarkey is wasted on me and on you by the sound of it.

molometer 6 months ago

Hello Amy,

Wow what a character. I guess some men are very vain, Narcissus for one comes to mind.

I agree with you a marriage is supposed to be a team sport not 'a star' and a cheering section.

Sounds like you had a lucky escape.

molometer 6 months ago

Thank you Sneha,

nice to know someone likes it lol.

I do too.

justom 6 months ago

I was laughing all the way through this hub. Marketing marketing marketing, they know women tend to buy anything that will make them look better or loose weight so now they're playing on that whole concept to try to force males to do the same. I've earned my graying hair and while my attire is casual I think anyone who knows me would be shocked if I ever attended an event in a tuxedo. I subscribe to just being yourself, just be happy. Peace!! Tom

Amy Becherer 6 months ago

My ex had absolutely beautiful salt & pepper hair. I am a licensed barber (long time ago) and cut his hair a lot more often than I had mine cut. In fact, he always did spend a lot more time in front of the mirror than I, which, personally, is a real turn-off. I think men should and do have the same options as women have always had. Hair dye, shaving products that pamper the skin, cologne, hair gels and the special, anti-yellowing shampoo for gray hair that my ex used, moisturizing lotions and Love Potion #9. One of the things that put me off my ex was his weekend shopping sprees for expensive clothing. I was busy being frugal while he had a BMW, two Harley Davidsons and expensive apparel. And, its not that he made much more than I brought in. ARGGGG... He should have bought Love Potion #9!!!

Sneha Sunny 6 months ago

Hey I can imagine you in brown hairs... but I must say that I like the present white ones more.. :D

Well, people these days don't even wait for their hairs to grow white to color them. :D

Hello Theresa,

I am hoping to age under any circumstances lol.

Hope it put a smile on your face.

Michael

phdast7 6 months ago

Lots of fun and interesting to boot! :) I am with you. Keeping the gray is so much easier; you never have to worry about your roots growing out and revealing your true hair-color. The nest we can do I suppose is age gracefully (but with a little spunk!) Theresa

molometer 6 months ago

Hi Alastar,

Just got to adjust my lippy before I reply:)

If only 7 grew I would be grateful, I am beginning to even consider a comb over:/

If only I was a little more vain I would; but my lack of concern for all things fashionable is holding me back lol

Glad it gave you a chuckle, your comments are like a gentle rain...always welcome.

Alastar Packer 6 months ago

What do you think your doing pushing the Jean Genie look on Hubpages molometer! Hahaa! Seriously though, you've got a great hub on the metrosexual here."..pariah that has just dragged a corpse into the room." Classic. Funny about the brown dye too, and molometer its not a myth, for every gray hair one plucks, seven really do grow in its place!

molometer 6 months ago

Hi Sunnie,

you know you are always welcome even in a 'man chat' lol

Men are getting the same pressure to look 'bang tidy' as women have had for year's.

It's a kind of perverse justice I suppose?

Thanks I like my grey hair too.

'The old silver fox' has a few moves left lol

Sunnie Day 6 months ago

I know I am dropping in on a man chat..lol but this was so good..Molometer...I have to say I love your white hair!..This was a great article...I think men are changing alot in how they care for themselves..I remember a pair of jeans, a flannel shirt, mountain boots would turn my head..Oh wait that was because I loved Grissely Adams..no matter..most men are groomed to the tee now..more so as much as women..I wish it was easier for women to not dye their hair..I am once more on a mission to not dye mine again..

Thanks again,

Sunnie
