How To Save Money 101

A penny saved is a penny earned. The fundamentals of finance. Well that's obvious isn't it? Apparently not. Saving money makes sense. The concept is simple "if you save a penny you haven't then got to go out and earn it." OK things you can do right now. I'm not going to give you 89 money saving tips. Just things you can do right now. Go on, get straight into it.

At Home

Turn off all electrical goods when not in use. Even on standby they use a third as much electricity as when on. That includes any phone chargers. Disconnect the phone from the charger as some chargers actually drain the battery on a cell phone if they are left attached. Only charge devices until they are full then disconnect them. Smart phones, laptops, power tools, electric razors. The fridge will have to stay on of course but what temperature is it set at? most food will keep fresh at between 3 - 5 degrees Celsius

(to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit take the Celsius 5 X 2 = 10 + 32 = 42 Fahrenheit.

If your fridge is any colder it is wasting energy. No smart remarks from our Alaskan cousins thank you. We all know you live in a natural fridge. Insulate as much as you can. If you have some old towels or any heavy cloth really, throw them at the base of exterior doors. Many people don't realise that there is a tiny gap at the bottom of the door and this can let in cold air. If you have an electrically heated boiler turn it off or put it on a timer. You need hot water when? so put it on an hour before you need it.

Running a boiler of this type is like permanently boiling a huge kettle all day every day. It will usually have a thermostat which will turn it off when it reaches the set temperature. But this means it is turning on and off all day long 24/7. Just to keep the water at a constant temperature. If you are out all day at work. What is the point. Find out how to use the timer system to regulate when the boiler fires up. If there is no timer, fit one. This alone will saves you $100's per year. This one act can cut your electricity bills by between 30 and 60 percent.

Go Solar

In money terms if your bill was $1000 per year you would save potentially $600, that's $600 you haven't got to earn. Sell some things you no longer need or use and buy a solar charger for your small electrical goods. And some solar panels for free water heating.

More simple money saving tips

Disposable razors. I have a disposable razor that I have been using for over a year and it's still working fine. How many razors have you thrown thinking "well it's disposable think I better throw it?"

Tooth paste. how much toothpaste do you throw in the trash-bin because you couldn't get anymore out of it? No house slippers wear socks. When making tea or coffee boil just enough water for your needs. One cup of tea requires one cup of water to be boiled. Why boil a whole kettle full? If you live in a country that has invested, billions of $'s or £'s in potable drinking water delivered to your home virtually for free, why are you buying bottled water? That's just dumb.

Bottled Water. Why

Drink tap water there is nothing wrong with it. If you really must; pour it into a mineral water bottle if it makes you feel better. No one will know. Cut car journeys to essential trips only. How many cars have you got? how many do you really need? Get rid of any excess transport as you are also getting rid of the costs associated with it. Taxes, fuel, insurance, maintenance tyres/tires need I go on. Rationalize your transport

Here's a novel idea walk to the shops if possible or go shopping once a month rather than every week. If you have children walk them to school again if possible and if you have the time. I can assure you that not only will you save a fortune the side benefit is you will lose weight and get fit for free. And you will feel great as your helping the planet. Many parents drive their children to school and yet live within a 5 - 15 minute walk of the school?

Cancel your Gym membership. 95% of people who have gym membership never go. This is how gyms make their money. Psychologically you feel OK as you have a gym membership but you never go. It's delusional. Get rid of it.

Buy In Bulk

Join a food wholesalers and buy canned goods by the slab 24 cans of beans, tomatoes and big bags of rice and pasta. Cook at home. It is often quicker to cook something from fresh at home than it is to order something and wait for it to be delivered. So no more take out Burgers, Pizza, Chinese, Indian rather cook at home more. Don’t buy expensive junk food when out and about. Don't buy peanuts from the guy in the video.

Make your own sandwiches or whatever it’s cheaper to prepare and cook your own food. When you do cook, cook in batches. A big vat of soup can be used and the excess frozen. Think of it in terms of; you only had to cook it once so go big and freeze the rest. If you can't cook , then get a recipe book from the library or find recipes online. Stand sauce bottles on their head to get all of the sauce out. Simple changes can make big savings.

Life Is A Roller Coaster Not A Merry Go Round

Ok so you don’t need me to tell you that things are getting a bit tight out there. I hope I have shown you some ways to save money by doing some simple things which can help you now and for the long term. It's amazing how many people say "well that's just common sense" if it so common sense why didn't they do it before? like many things in like

"Common sense is only common sense, once it's pointed out.

Finally whenever the economy tanks like this and it does on a regular basis people seem to react to it as if it has never happened before. I suppose for younger people this may be the first time they have experienced such a poor economic outlook.

So for those of you that don't already know. This roller-coaster ride of boom followed by bust is the natural order of the economic cycle and system that we live in. Capitalism. So unless you can come up with a better idea you are going to have to get used to it. Last tip today. In winter wear more clothes around the house and turn the heating down.

There is no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothing.

The Replacement Rule

Only buy new items with money you have earned from selling off your old stuff. This has the benefit of de-cluttering your house/garage/shed and giving you cash on hand. If you then see something you want, you can maybe buy it without drawing money from other areas. Remember that a want is not a need. Needs are essentials shelter, food, clothing things we need to survive.

Wants And Needs

Wants are non essentials, the latest phone, shoes, handbags you can live without. When thinking of spending money on something, think first. Do I really need it? if the answer is no, don't buy it. I hope these simply tips will help you to start saving money today and make a plan for the future. The other side of this equation is of course to make more money. See my other hubs on ways to really make money online in these difficult times.

Hi Tammy,

I remember my father telling me when I was a kid, that Coleman's mustard, made their fortunes by the amount of mustard left on the plate. So true. Waste not want not as the saying goes.

Hi Aurelio,

I agree it is a great idea to only spend money made from selling off unwanted things.

Excellent tips. People make fun of me because I hate waste. I use all of the toothpaste and shampoo. You make me feel much better. :)

Excellent suggestions but the one that appealed to me the most was buying stuff only from money you earned from selling old stuff. It also makes you wait -- you may decide that after you've spent all the time saving the money, you may decide not to buy it after all. Voting this Up and Useful. SHARED.

My largest step to saving money is having the process automated. I make sure retirement comes out before I get paid. I have automatic withdrawals set up to come out once I'm paid to a separate savings account at another bank. I have automatic withdrawals for my ROTH, etc. That way, I can't make an excuse that I'll just 'double up' next pay check.

Instead, I'm forced to balance my checking account and make due with whats left over after everything clears. If you're doing it right, there shouldn't be much left over to worry about!

Thanks Theresa,

I often find myself doing the same thing.

There are so many ways that we can save money just by thinking a little differently.

I know it environmental credentials are questionable but I love my Prius lol

Hi Michael-

I remember reading this once before, but I have no idea why I wandered off without commenting. Good suggestions all, and very doable.

They know me by name at the local Good Will store. I donate what we don't need or want and and shop there for things that need to be in good condition, but certainly don't need to be new. Good Hub. :)

It's because we aren't in the UK and the channel 4 site won't allow us to watch it....I'd probably end up throwing my socks at the screen anyway!!

Not to worry Debbie, you are probably better off not knowing the nonsense being peddled as news over here.

Out of bounds? are your connections firewalled or restricted for some reason?

Hi molometer, thank you for taking the time to find the link, but it won't play here. I'm out of bounds....Couldn't find much on YouTube either..

Hi Debbie,

It was on channel 4 and you can probably see it on youtube. I found you the link to the original show.

Have a giggle.

I'm not sure I'll be able to see it over here as we aren't in the UK and we can't use the television channels On Demand services even on the internet.. I will try though as I could do with a laugh.

molometer profile image

molometer Hub Author 5 months ago

Hi Debbie, it was truly outrageous. I'll see if I can find the link for you. Very annoying to put that kind of thing on the TV.

debbie roberts profile image

debbie roberts Level 6 Commenter 5 months ago

I'll have to see is I get hold of the program just for the entertainment value I think!! Saying that though, on this island the buses and taxis tend to be privately owned and work for holiday companies during the summer months and then they can earn some good money , but that's not a reflection on the common and garden peoples wages.

Think I'll start with a small bus.....

molometer profile image

molometer Hub Author 5 months ago

Hi Debbie,

The TV show was called. Go Greek For A Week.

Absolutely scandalous.

molometer profile image

molometer Hub Author 5 months ago

Hi Debbie,

You would not believe what has been on TV in the UK about Greece.

According to the media everyone in Greece is earning a fortune.

They had this bus driver who gets a £250 bonus a week on top of his wages just for turning up early for work.

I'll find the show and send you the link.

You can imagine the reaction here?

Hi molometer, sorry been having a few life hiccups.

The country is in a bit of a mess,we will have to see what the new Prime minister can do with the mess he's been handed.

Most peoples wages are incredibly bad here and the government is introducing new taxes so I think things will kick off again. Businesses are suffering, but I think that's not only here in this country. My opinion is that things here will get worse before they get better and hopefully with that lessons will be learnt. Time will tell.

Nice to know that things are not as bleak as the news media would have us believe.

Hi debbie,

Wow how are you getting along. We hear such horror stories about Greece.

It seems that the country is about to collapse.

I imagine it's not as bad as it is being portray, or is it?

It's good to hear from someone actually in the country. I'll be over to check out your hubs.

Thanks for the comments.

Great ideas and even when we know them, we need to be reminded and encouraged to save money. which often helps save the planet as well.

Informative hub. With things the way they are these days we all have to be careful with our money. My biggest bugbear where we live (Greece) is that we have to drink bottles water. But simple things like unplugging chargers and properly turning off electronics at night all help in the long run.

hello stephaniedas,

Great comments and thanks for sharing them with us. We all need to be reminded sometimes that thrift is not just good sense it can save a packet.

Also there are a new generation out there that do not know the things we take for granted.

Are they still running the insulation program near you if so why not write a hub on your area. I'm sure it would be helpful.

I will do the same here in the UK. As we have a similar scheme running here.

And as you know it can save a fortune.

Thanks for the great advice too.

This is what hubpages is really useful for, your right.

Hello Amy

Thanks for the great comments.

I think there are several hubs there that you could put together If you haven't already.

The medicine one alone would be really helpful.

On insulation.

I suggest only covering the gaps under the door when needed and the house should be "aired daily" as you say those offices or workplaces with now fresh air are bug breeding grounds.

Thanks for the very useful advice.

Hey there,

I used to work for Community Action, and we had an entire department devoted to weatherizing houses. People would come in because they couldn't afford to pay their heating bill in the winter, so we'd send our guys out there and they would take extremely simple measures to cut these people's heating bills in half- filling in cracks around doors and windows, insulating the hot water heater, and simply educating the homeowners..."Don't keep your space heater next to the window", "Keep the curtains closed so less heat escapes", etc. They were really simple things, but people were just uneducated, so they lost money every month on staying warm!

Anyway, I'm lucky that I got to work with these guys, because now my heating bills are substantially lower.

Some other tricks I picked up...When your house is being built, keep big windows toward the south, and plant a row of trees along the north end of your house to serve as a windbreak.

Another great hub about easy ways to be frugal. Every penny counts, and they add up to dollars in the end...I guess that's the whole idea of hubpages :)

I had just finalized my divorce, gotten a great annual review from the company I worked at for 13-years (commuting 90-miles roundtrip) and was laid off 2 weeks after I signed my lease on an apartment 12-minutes from my former workplace.

I buy only essentials. I can no longer afford healthcare (congress repealed the subsidy making it affordable), have an autoimmune disease that I take prescription meds for that cost $600/month without health insurance. I went to the online site of the pharmaceutical manufacturer and found a form for my doctor and myself to fill out and if I qualify for "free" meds, I will be able to continue my care.

As a sidenote, I was left a washing machine and dryer by a former neighbor who moved. I cleaned her apartment so she would get her deposit back in exchange. The washing machine did not work. A neighbor who rents a basement apartment was using the machines, too and noticed it did not agitate. He moved a left behind machine into the place of the non-working washer. I used it the other day and noticed, upon drying off after my shower, the towel smelled like "decomp", seriously. I figure, in the washer's long vacation, a mouse must have died inside it. I gathered every piece I had laundered in that load, and sure enough, decomp left its unmistakeable remains. I guess there is some truth to "you get what you pay for"! My laundry is now in the coin machines in the complex getting sanitized with hot water, detergent and bleach. Nonetheless, I doubt I'll ever use that towel again!!!

I am the recepient of many coupons sent in the mail from the stores around me competing for business. Target sent me many significant saving coupons, including a dozen eggs free (without any purchase) and $7 off of any purchase $75 or more.

I keep my thermostat low in the winter to compensate for the degree of cool I use to keep my dog comfortable in the summer. Although, we have had a few nights in the 30's this Fall, I have refrained from running the heat. I do not block the doors with towels, as I actually think some exchange of air is healthier than not. At my former workplace, I was in the front office where I not only enjoyed the only windows in the building, but the front door. I wore my coat all winter as it was so cold from influx and outgoing traffic, but I was one of the few people that wasn't constantly sick. The cubicles that everyone else resided in all day were germ coffins that circulated the same bugs back and forth all winter.

Thanks for the pertinent, beneficial ideas, molometer.

Thank you.
