Do You Suffer From Snoring Or Does Your Partner?

Snoring, when you consider the problems that snoring causes it may be worth your time to read a little further.

If you think you or your partner is suffering from the more serious condition of sleep apneoa click here (Sometimes spelled apnea?)

If you have slept besides someone that snores you know how it can make you feel. Homicidal?

Health and welfare begins with a good nights sleep and many people neglect this fundamental human need at their peril.

We sleep for a third of our lives so it is a major part of who we are. For comparison. How far do you think you would get with a third of your car missing?

This is serious folks. Did you know that if you are suffering from sleep apneoa you are risk of having a heart attack or a stroke?

Thought that might get your attention. Snoring during pregnancy will lead to extreme tiredness during waking hours, so it needs prompt attention.

Some things to look out for

How about nocturnal choking episodes while your asleep, or shaking during sleep?

Do you have to pass urine several times a night?

Do you suffer with a dry mouth. If so, you may have a variant or Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA)

OSA can impair memory and concentration and can affect your driving. If untreated may increase the risks of heart disease, stokes and high blood pressure?

Do you wake up with a headache sometimes? This could indicate your oxygen levels are low.

Does This Look Familiar?

Snoring Help? So Who's Problem Is it?

It is often stated that the snorer is not the one with the problem? It’s the person lying beside them that has the problem.

Apart from the noise, sleeping beside someone shaking during sleep can be disturbing.

Whilst this is undoubtedly a problem for the person trying to sleep beside the snorer it overshadows the problems that the snorer is having.

Why is this, the case? Well the snorer is unaware of the distress they are causing their non-sleeping partner.

They may have little idea of the problems it is causing for the non-snorer.

Awake all night = Sleep all day?

The non-snorer is likely to be suffering from some form of sleep deprivation and may legitimately be angry at the snorer.

Snoring is a problem for all of us. We all end up paying for it, one way or another.

Financial Implications

The impact of poor sleep on our personal finance is serious enough.

The cumulative effect of lost working days is also felt in it's economic impact, on the wider economy.

Secondly the financial impact on the UK National Health Services, that is already running a huge budget deficit.

This affects the whole nation and cannot be underestimated. In Britain:-

In 2009/10 an estimated 9.8 million working days were lost through stress in the UK. Although we all ... Go to bed early; lack of sleep exacerbates stress.

Source: spar.co.uk

Poor sleep can lead to many problems. From fatal vehicle accidents to stress and chronic fatigue syndrome, where the patient can be incapacitated for weeks, months even years.

This has serious implications for already stretched UK health services. It makes economic sense to help fix the snoring problem, before it develops into a much more dangerous and expensive condition.

The health and well-being of the individual, makes sound financial sense. What is good for the snorer is also good for the economy and the country.

Drowsy Drivers

Shaking During Sleep

The snorer is usually oblivious to the noise and shaking during sleep. It can appear to the non-snorer that their sleep partner is unconcerned or indifferent to their suffering.

In defense of the snorer remember:-

The snorer is not being kept awake all night.

It’s hard to comprehend what it is like to be sleep deprived… until it happens to you.

So what is snoring and why does it happen?

Breathe with a snorting or grunting sound while asleep source:-Google free dictionary

A more detailed description of snoring can be stated as:-

“Snoring is defined as a coarse sound made by vibrations of the soft palate and other tissue in the mouth, nose & throat (upper airway).

It is caused by turbulence inside the airway during inspiration.

The turbulence is caused by a partial blockage, that may be located anywhere from the tip of the nose to the vocal chords.

The restriction may occur only during sleep, or it may persist all the time and be worse when we are asleep.

This is because our muscle tone is reduced during sleep. There may be insufficient muscle tone to prevent the airway tissue vibrating”. Source

If your sleep partner stops breathing or appears to stop breathing during sleep, and is shaking during sleep, this is a much more serious condition. You should contact your doctor or medical professional immediately.

They may be suffering from sleep apnea. This can be life threatening and you should get examined.

Snoring There Are Real Solutions

The good news is that the human body’s autonomic nervous systemm takes care of us, pretty well.

If we do stop breathing, it will kick start us, by making us jerk in our sleep. However this adds to disturbed sleep.

Cures.

There have been 1000's of ideas over the years. from tying a tennis ball around your chest. The ball sits in the middle of the back, making it uncomfortable for the snorer to roll onto their back.

Watching your diet, stacking up loads of pillows, sleeping with your head hanging over the edge of the bed to mention just a few. Most do not work

Anyone that has slept with a snorer, knows that they snore, in any position. I don’t think the tennis ball or any of the other methods, would be any use at all.

It’s not completely hopeless. There have been some breakthrough technologies developed in recent years. They can be very effective but are dependent on why you snore. For example:-

“Being overweight: if you have a collar size of 16½ inches or greater, you may not have the muscle tone needed to keep the airway open sufficiently at night to allow normal breathing”

Some of these new treatments are just 15 minute procedures. Done on a walk in basis, with no general anesthetic, or the need for a hospital stay.

This treatment involves inserting a few pins into the soft palate and fixing it to the hard palate.

Hi Aurelio,

I don't want to scaremonger, but the snoring is just the outward warning.

You really should get it checked, by a Doctor.

The solutions can be very simple and effective.

It could prolong your life too?

Secondly snoring disrupts your sleep pattern.

It can leave us feeling tired and worn out.

I have spent the last 5 months researching, having tests done and seeing specialists.

I am now on Melatonin and feel much better, more alert and this after just 2 days.

Thanks for reading hope you think about it carefully.

I'm a big snorer and have tried everything to quiet it down. Nothing works. I have found that losing weight tends to minimize the problem. Haven't tried clinics or operations though, but don't want to go through that hassle. Voting this Up and Interesting.

Hello justateacher,

My wife Linda has the C-pap machine and it has transformed her life. I would recommend it strongly to your husband. It has to be set up properly by a nurse for an individuals needs. As long as that happens it should work great.

My husband and I both snore....I don't know who is worse! He went in for a sleep study and they determined he needed the C-pap machine. He refuses to get it because he has had one in the past and it bugged him! I am going in for a study soon...as soon as the doc can get it scheduled....

Hi Kim,

Thanks I'll add it into the hub. I have had members of my family telling me they have had the same problems sleeping.

For years they have put up with it and never knew they could solve this problem.

I think this hub alone justifies the amount of time I spend on hubpages.

This is helping people. Thanks for your valuable input.

Hello tammy, If I were you, knowing what I know now I would get it checked.

Who knows how many people have died prematurely from heart attacks brought on by snoring?

It's not that widely talked about and as you say. Partners just get irritated by it because they don't know either.

Do yourself a favour and get checked, just to be sure.

I popped over to your writers site earlier. Looks interesting. I have some articles to post tomorrow maybe.

Do me a favour and share this hub with your people, no need for comments. I just want people to be aware of the dangers of no doing anything about it. Thanks

I have tried so many things to stop from snoring...and now I just tell my partner that it is okay to wake me up and send me to the sofa in the middle of the night. That way I can sleep and so can he. Thanks for your tips.

Thanks Kim,

It amazes me how little the subject of snoring is discussed publicly concerning such a serious condition. Except to moan or ridicule the snorer.

I suppose it's like many things we take for granted until it goes wrong.

Thanks for reciprocating on the link, it makes sense to try to co-ordinate resources.

I just tried to access your link http://kimh039.hubpages.com/hub/SleepApneaStroke)

It returns a page error 404 page not found? Check it out and let me know when it is active again. And I'll include it here.

Thanks again and congratulations on a remarkable hub.

Thanks so much for the link molometer. I have also linked your hub to mine. You might want to check another hub I did awhile back on "Sleep Apnea Increases Risk of Stroke" (http://kimh039.hubpages.com/hub/SleepApneaStroke). I am glad to hear that you and your wife are getting treatment for this very serious condition. You raise a good point in your hub about how snoring effects the one snoring as well as the bed partner. rated up and useful.

Thanks fpherj48,

It is so common that we really have ignored for too long this killer condition. Good on you, get tested. Sleep I have come to realise is so important and snoring really is no joke.

Thanks for the votes appreciated but just want everyone to 'get this message'

Thanks Susan,

I have put up with this for far too long thinking it was just one of those things but the implications when I think back on my life are huge.

When I was early in my career I was constantly tired and after many years just collapsed from exhaustion.

I did not even make the connection with poor sleep. What a lot of time I have wasted navel gazing when all I probably needed was a good nights kip.

If I were to give anyone advice it would be to at least get checked out.

I'll let you know about my outcome.

My wife is on level 13 on the c-pap so she is pretty bad I guess.

Who knew it is so shocking that we tend to ignore snoring as 'just one of those things'

Thanks for sharing Susan

molometer. Just in time! Thank you for this great hub. I was scheduled for a sleep study but canceled and never re-scheduled. Your hub has inspired me to make that appointment! I KNOW I snore. There is no shortage of bullies around here who don't announce this while laughing at me!! OK,OK, so I snore. I better take care of this for my health! Thanks again. Up & useful!

I will most definitively share this hub on twitter and on my Facebook page. I hope that the trip to your doctor turns out well.

Hi Susan, We have just come back from the sleep clinic and I can tell you, it has freaked me out.

I knew it was a pain in the butt and had serious health implications but boy did I underestimate it big time.

I am going to my doctor and asking for an assessment to be done pronto.

Hi Sunshine. My wife has just spent the night in the sleep clinic and has been issued with a C-Pap machine too. I am going to get checked tomorrow. I knew it was a serious issue but this new information is very disturbing indeed.

I am thinking of all those single people that you mentioned. They may never know and bam, heart attack or stroke from no where. How scary

Dear Hubbers, Very Important Update to this particular hub.

Please do me a huge favour and share this with everyone you have on your networks.

I assure you this is not a ploy to get traffic. It's a medical imperative.

I have just returned from the Papworth hospital, sleep clinic where I have discovered further information on the extreme seriousness of this issue of snoring.

The links were in the original post but I want to know that everyone got the full information.

Thank you in advance.

Hello sunshine625 and thanks for dropping into this kind of odd hub.

I wrote it because no-one talks about it and if you bring it up to the snorer they can get quite irritated (because they don't know they snore)

So you say the C-pap machine is effective for your husband; its good to know that at least something works.

Thanks for the input.

I know it sounds daft but we really do need to get over the stigma attached to snoring and talk about it. It can be a nightmare. (no pun intended)

My husband was a snorer until I insisted he go to a sleep clinic and he was diagnosed with Sleep Apnea. He sleeps much better (and so do I) with the C-Pap machine.

People who live alone will never know they have issues with snoring and might have sleep apnea unless someone threatens to smother them so they could restful sleep.

Hi John thanks for your comment, seems like the Doc isn't getting enough good sleep. Maybe you should show the Doc the article? :-)

PS Us paddies do get about, quite a bit.

I have a doctor who sleeps at his desk as he is supposed to be writing out prescriptions - the only thing that wakens him is his first snore, so snoring can be very, very helpful.

P.S. My grandparents moved to

Scotland from Eire - they'd already tried America, England and Canada, but finally decided on Gods own country.

Thanks stephaniedas for the visit, vote and comment. I think the truth is most people snore at some point in their lives. It's one of those things that some people feel embarrassed about and get annoyed when you tell them (after all they don't know, their asleep!)

I like the sound of the "choir practice".

I grew up in a house full of snorers- my brother and I used to say that Mom, Dad, and Dog had nightly choir practice. I don't mind my boyfriend's snoring, because it is very soft. Thankfully, he reports that I only snore when I have a cold. It can be a big problem! Nice hub, voted up and useful.

Hello Movie Maker and thanks for dropping in and voting up. Snoring is a big problem for the non-snorer and can effect their well being. There are some remedies that work but the vast majority don't. I wrote this hub to warn people to check remedies out before parting with their cash. Hope this help with your husband's snoring. Why not try a couple and let us know what happens. I like the tennis ball idea, probable won't work but will irritate him lol.
