Hubpages Addiction

I have almost stopped smoking.

I didn't plan to. It just happened.

If you want to quit one bad habit, replace it with another good habit, as the the old adage says. And It works.

I cannot pull myself off the computer long enough for a puff. And that is a good thing. This is the classic definition of an addiction

Hubpages gives one the euphoria of some major narcotics without the guilt or the potential jail time.

It is better than online games as you end up with something tangible, your hub.

I've got it bad. Eureka moments come thick and fast but not followed by, down in the dump moments.

One minute you think you have it all sussed out, and then realise you really don't. Which just makes me work harder to understand, each particular element of the puzzle.

All the time, words of encouragement stream in, if you are lucky enough to meet the kind of hubbers I have and you keep plugging away.

This Addiction Makes Me Money Too?

Then one day, you see that you have earned $0.4 c.

Definition Of An Addiction

Okay not exactly high finance but you still jump around and tell everyone who you can tie down, that you have earned $0.4 c.

For a months solid writing work, for 12 hours a day. And they look at you as if you are a raving lunatic? And they are right to think that. But they are wrong as usual!

The hours of research, the editing, re-editing, proofreading and you still miss a typo.

These obsessive behaviors and thinking you are 'right' are also classic signals in the definition of an addiction

To the non hubber these behaviors may seem extreme, but it is what many of us do. Why? because we love it.

We are learning the craft of writing, in the company of a supportive and encouraging group of friends. That is the real power of hubpages.

They don't know what you and I know, $0.4 c is just an indicator, a start, this thing works you just have to figure it out.

Months later it all becomes clear. The community is everything and they are what really matters. 'It's a business Jim but now as we know it.' To paraphrase Star Treks Dr. McCoy.

When Is A Hub Finished? lol

Eureka! I Think I've Got It?

When you have those breakthrough moments, and for me they came thick and fast.

You begin to realise, that there are many elements, that have to work together, in order for your work to really stand out on the world wide web.

As an ICT teacher, I learned a lot too.

No amount of tweaking and fiddling around is going to replace those supportive and kind words that the hubbers give.

We all share a common goal. We want to write and we want to be read. Each hubber has their own particular taste's.

From brilliant poet's like Epigramman (Cambridge time overlooking the fens 13.34 pm) to Lobobrandon who just like me, writes on a diverse range of topics.

Including the kitchen sink!, and what extractor fan you need for your kitchen.

Each writing project is equally creative but aims to address different needs and emotions in the reader.

Apart from the sheer joy of reading and writing our hubs, many of us like recognition of our writing efforts.

The easiest way to gauge whether you are writing things that other people are enjoying is to look at your statistics.

HubPages Statistics

  • Published Hubs: 1,228,008

  • Hubs with 100+ Hub views in the last month: 58,085
  • Hubs with 10+ Hub views in the last month: 278,348

Source Hubpages.com

I am currently on the third tier of this table of statistics with 4000+ page views per month and this is after just 3 months of writing on hubpages.

This just adds fuel to the other addictive elements of hubpages. The point about this hubpages addiction is, that in psychological terms it is very good for you. It does conform to the definition of an addiction but without the negative connotations or consequences.

How often have you heard that if you want to quit one bad habit, get another good habit.

This hubpages addiction has many positive impacts on our health, writing reduces stress for one.

The nature of the ever evolving process of writing gives us positive feedback.

This is sometimes known as a virtuous circle. Think, write, think some more, write some more, the process itself is therapeutic.

Hub No 50 What My Addiction Means To Me

At the time of publishing this 50th hub I have reached several milestones,

On the 14th March 2012 I have 502 followers and have had 20,000+ views of my hubs.

I have received accolades for 300 followers and 10,000 views. A hubnugget nomination and answered 50 questions in the forums.

I have achieved what I had set out to achieve i.e. to prove that it was possible to make money online, from scratch, with no prior knowledge of writing 'articles' for a particular audience.

I am now just addicted to the whole process. It's fun and rewarding in so many ways.

My hubs are on such disparate topics because I do not want to limit myself or find a 'niche'.

I just enjoy writing about what I like or what is on my mind.

I didn't go looking for a niche but just write whatever I felt like writing. All of my hubs in that respect are essays or trails or experiments.

I do have a lot of experience on the internet, and on how search engines work, and on the software that runs the whole system.

These skills came in useful, but were not much help when you want to write about Snoring.

The hubpages community is truly amazing.

One day back in October 2011 I was lucky enough to follow a random link on bookface which led me here.

I had been thinking about writing for many years when I fell into hubpages; with it's ready made and nicely designed user interface.

It was easy to use and allowed quick publication. I was hooked from the start.

Today I am happy to say, that my hubpages addiction has allowed me to meet (virtually) some truly amazing people, from all over the World.

Global Friends

In the link box below are just 15 of my fellow hubbers, who I am sharing this journey with.

They are from every corner of the world and reading their hubs is like being a virtual tourist.

Many describe where they live and the local places of interest and their writing transports us there.

Anyone that has traveled the world, and knows anything about tourism, will know that to have a local person, telling you about their part of the country, beats any generic tour guide hands down.

Local knowledge from local people.

My hub friends listed below are in no particular order, they are all great in different ways and I had to stop somewhere.

If you are not on the list forgive me, I could have gone on and on but we must think of the reader?

In this tiny selection of my hub friends you will find, truly inspirational and brilliant teacher's, computer specialist's, poet's, novelist's, creative's and a singing nurse.

The singing nurse has written a great hub on the health benefit's of writing, amongst her other great hubs. Writing for therapy also has elements that fit in with this definition of an addiction.

They all have something in common. They are all at the top of their game, and are passionate about what they do, and write about.

So what are my feelings about being a hubpages addict? I am in very good company and I hope to never find a cure.

Hi Alastar,

lol you really made me chuckle and have put a wide smile on my face.

I have never been called a tenderfoot before! I like it lol

You will always have my respect and gratitude, for your unwavering support, since I joined hubpages.

It can get a little hectic sometimes, when I look back on earlier hubs and see so many errors!

At least this tells me I must be improving and becoming more critical of the layouts and typo's.

Proofreading 101. Always read the thing from the bottom up and backwards, for the typos at least! lol

Thanks for a great comment as always.

The enthusiasm of a tenderfoot. Such a nice thing to see. Those typos are heck but you'll get better at it as you go along. Okay molometer, AP will face the truth. At 4,000+ page views a month your the vet and I'm the tenderfoot at a somewhat lower number; and any remaining respect from you will be highly appreciated. Awesome addicting and funny Hub my friend!

Your hub on hub addiction is well expressed and right on.

Good luck quitting smoking. Smoking cigarettes is both an addiction and a compulsion. The basic guideline for quitting is, if you try to quit and fail, quit again.

Hello WD Curry 111,

I agree with you that the term is used in the wrong context in some cases, although I think some people truly believe, that we can become 'addicted' to the 'feelings' we get from say sex and gambling. i.e. Endorphin and or an adrenalin rush.

I read some research many years ago about heroin addicts in New York.

300 were arrested in possession of the 'drugs' and had been getting 'high' on this stuff.

When it was analyzed it was found to contain no narcotics at all?

Conclusion it was their own brains giving the the 'rush'.

I think the point is well made that behind many 'addictions' we are really dealing with a compulsion.

By that criteria I would have to conclude that hubpages has all the elements of an addiction. With none of the negative side effects. Writing is in fact very good for stress relief amongst other things.

Thanks for a very thought provoking and interesting comment. I hope you pushed the buttons on this hub lol.

PS I have noticed my hubscore and am totally baffled by it's movement into the 90's?

Hello starstream,

Happy to have you along for the journey. I totally agree with your assessment too.

WD Curry 111 profile image

WD Curry 111 Level 8 Commenter 2 months ago

We have become loose with our use of the term "addiction" these days. Technically, an addiction requires dependence on a substance that causes physiological withdrawal symptoms, like heroin, nicotine or alcohol. We have morphed it into anything that stimulates pleasure centers in the brain or causes the body’s release of internally produced chemicals like serotonin or endorphins.

You can not be addicted to Sex, gambling, or HubPages. I read of a clinical, psychological study conducted on rats. Each rat's cage was equipped with a button that dispensed a little food when pushed. The rats quickly learned how to acquire a meal. It became routine. The scientists then set the buttons in half of the rats cages to dispense food intermittently, and at random. The rats with normal buttons only pushed them when they were hungry. Soon, the rats with modified buttons began to punch their buttons continually. Finally, some even reached a point where they were so obsessed with pushing the button that they would ignore the food when it was dispensed. The unrewarded anticipation became a stronger motivator than the reward itself. The scientists used this as an example of how compulsive behavior works.

Are you keeping an eye on your HubScore? It is not an an addiction . . . it is compulsive behavior!

Hello Justin,

If I had to pick the just one thing that a 'hubpages addiction' offers, it would be the ability to begin to learn a new skill, or more accurately polish up and existing one.

Writing is such a subjective art and it is good to get feedback.

I find that when I look back on my earlier hubs again. I sometimes see areas that can be improved, this indicates to me that I may have improved some.

I know that you often update your hubs and I can see the sense of it.

Thanks for dropping in Justin and for leaving a great comment.

Hello cclitgirl,

Well that's probably the truth lol. Next time some one chirp's me about hubbing. I am going to quietly stand up, take a deep breath and say

'my hubname is molometer, and I am a HubAholic'

I have to give credit to JSMatthews for that gem.

It should get a laugh lol

Thanks JS,

Your more than welcome. I took your advice again, the other day about rationalizing.

I had been following hubbers that hadn't written in 3 years. Still there was some good stuff there so I didn't throw the baby out with the bath water.

See, told you I listen to your advice.

My momma never raised no fools lol

YES! I'm addicted, too. I joined just over a month ago and I get told, "you never get off that computer!" My excuse? I'm "hubbing" and researching. :D

@molometer: I too have a big smile on my face! It is so awesome to hear that I am helpful to other Hubbers. I have learned through trial and error and I try to share those experiences with others so that they don't make the same mistakes. I do wonder if there will ever be a "HubAholics Anonymous"! I'd probably miss the meetings because there is just not enough time to keep up with comments! Seriously, I really appreciate what you said. This is what the HubPages community is all about and I am happy that we are friends.

@ytsenoh: I am the same. I have no care to know who went shopping or had a bad case of diarrhea! This is all about creative content and sharing ideas with each other. I use Facebook to promote Hubs but since most of my friends on FB are family, I don't get much traffic from that. I'm with you: Kudos to the Hubbers!

I think JS would agree with you ytsenoh, They are like chalk and cheese, no comparison.

Writing on hubpages takes thought, preparation and effort as you know.

I agree with you too, I don't want to know if someone is 'watching paint dry right now' lol.

JS Matthews, it's better than facebook. I rarely check my feeds on facebook now because I focus more on reading more meaningful content instead of reading items like, "I had a migraine today, help!" or "I vacuumed today, yay!" Really? Kudos to the hubbers.

molometer Hub Author 4 months ago

Ha ha I have got a huge smile on my face.

I am a HubAholic lol

JS you have been a tremendous help to me and countless hubbers in your role as a hubgreeter, and I know you are taking a little time out from your hubgreeter activities.

Your hubs pointed me in the right direction from the start. Thank you.

I have come so far, so fast because of HubAholic's like you. Well done and you have a great New Year too.

My name is J.S.Matthew and I'm a HubAholic...Hi J.S.Matthew! lol Congratulations on this milestone molometer! It took me over a year to do what you have accomplished in 3 months! I can agree that HubPages is addicting. It is such a positive and encouraging community. It is as if all the best people on the web get together on one site. You are one of those people!

It's true that non Hubbers just don't get it. They think this is like Facebook or something. And making money does take a while for most Hubbers. I didn't really start earning until 2011. Editing and reediting are very important. I know that I am constantly adding and changing things in old Hubs.

This is a really awesome Hub! Keep up the great work, thanks for your comments on my own Hubs, and may you have a prosperous New Year on HubPages!

Hello Hubbers, just to let you know why I haven't responded to each comment as I usually do. This hub has had 40 fantastic comments in less than 4 hours. Thank you all, and I owe you all big time. You are all in credit in my book. My back office (me) is overwhelmed.lol Thanks for making it a great hub.

Awesome hub, Molometer. It is completely addictive in every positive sense of the word. It's more than just a writing outlet, it's a home of writers. Thumbs up to you.

This is a great hub on why we love writing at HubPages so much. I'm like you, I write on a variety of topics when the inspiration hits. I've tried looking for topics to write about, based on keyword research, but it just doesn't do it for me. When I'm inspired, I could write for days and is probably why my hubs tend to be so long.

Congrats on your 50th hub! Looking forward to reading more. Rated up and awesome!

Awesome hub, molometer! You've done well in your short time here. You are so right that I chuckled when I read about your being so excited about your 4 cents after a month of hard work! I was the same way when my first payday--6 cents!--showed up in my account. It's silly and wonderful and hopeful. HubPages is a great place to be. I'm glad you found it!

Haha, you are so right. In fact I was going to write a hub myself about the addiction Hubpages brings. If it has replaced a bad habit then that can't be bad.

I have a way to go yet before hitting 50 hubs, but am noticing my 'earnings' going up.

It's safe to say, I am hooked too ;)

molometer - congrats on hitting 50 hubs...I did that some time ago and didn't even think about it! I am also up to a little over $2.00 in earnings each month!!! Hubbing is definitely addicting, but in such a great positive way. This is the one website I MUST be on each day...sometimes I get so carried away with reading everyone else that I forget to write!

Truly beautiful! It would be my pleasure if the method you suggested for quitting smoking could be applied upon my husband. Well, for me it has really turned out to be an addiction and like you I too don't want to be cured.

Hi poshcoffee,

Thanks for dropping in and leaving your comment. I haven't heard about missolive's hub hopper's club. Do we have to wear special clothing etc lol

You doing 30/30 I actually might do that too. I have a project that would suit it.

Speak soon

Thank you so much Theresa, you made me blush.

Sorry to drag you back into the additive arms of hubpages when you have work to do. My bad lol

I'll let you go hit the books, I really should get on with the other side of my life too as an educator.

Maybe next week lol.

I will boldly go on to 100.

PS Linda is over her Flu and is up and about, I have a meeting on the 18th, for a deputy principal post. I will probably take it.

Thanks again everyone,

I am a very lucky man indeed. I have had the privilege to work as a teacher for many years, and now I have found a community of intelligent people who are passionate about what the do.

My agent keeps asking me when I will be available and I keep saying next week lol.

My life was already great, now it has gone up a gear.

I will be starting on my new project from tomorrow. I am going to write about my travels across America many years ago.

I feel confident enough that I will do it justice. I hope you will like them. If I mess it up I can always edit.

Congratulations on 50 Hubs, and on enjoying your addiction, and on making some money, and on cutting back on smoking! As you said, what wonderful side effects to have flow seamlessly from doing something you enjoy so much. :)

We enjoy your writing, probably more important, we enjoy you: your personality, your style of writing, your clever repartee, and your generous comments. Thank you for the Mention - it was kind of you and it deepen my addiction a little. :) May you and yours live long and prosper. On to Hub number 100.

You are right, there is no cure for this addiction and if there was, we wouldn't take it anyway! You described the joy of writing at Hubpages perfectly, it is all the things you say and I found myself nodding as I read this. I enjoyed this tribute very much and I wish you all the best and continued success with your writing!

Voted up and shared!
